What is special in Zambia

I have a meeting in Lusaka in early September, and wanted to add on a one week holiday.

I have been on safari in Kenya and Botswana, but know nothing about Zambia. If I wanted to go on safari - what is special in Zambia, in terms of areas, wildlife experiences, and camps.

Budget - Less than US$1000 per night for a double.

cheers

We're going through Lusaka this fall and taking the short trip (under hour flight I believe) to Livingstone to see Victoria Falls. Once you're there, you're close to spectacular places like Botswana (Chobe, Okavango Delta, etc.), Zimbabwe private reserves, etc.

I believe there are also some good outings from Lusaka.

What a great time to go. Walking safaris in South Luangwa that include night drives are a great way to go. You can base yourself in one location and go out each day or walk from bush camp to camp or do a mobile walking safari.

Below is something I posted earlier on South Luangwa.

The various camps do have loyal followings, but I would not hesitate to go (or return) to any of them.

Robin Pope operates these in South Luangwa
The famous Tena Tena
Nkawali
Nsefu
plus mobile walking safaris
They also arrange a visit for a few hours or days to Kawaza village for a cultural experience.

In North Luangwa they work closesly, but do not own, Kutandala, which is run by Rod and Guz Tether. Crossing the very shallow Mwaleshi River in bare feet for walking safaris is a special way to start and end an outing, as is the entire camp atmosphere and gourmet food. You can add Kutandala onto any S. Luangwa itinerary.

The Coppingers (Remote Africa) operate these in South Luangwa
Takfika--you can do a microlight flight there which is unique and probably special. I wouldn't know as I opted out because it was too scary for me.
Chikoko -- where you can walk to Crocodile
Crocodile -- where you can walk to Chikoko
In N. Luangwa they operate Mwaleshi

Norman Carr Safaris operates these in South Luangwa
Kapani
Then you can do a walking safari and stop at any combo of these camps:
Kakuli
Luwi
Nsolo
Mchenja
You can also just drive to any of these camps and stay there without walking between the camps.

Shentons operate these in South Luangwa
Kaingo
Mwamba
Both of these have some fascinating hides for various species such as hippos or colorful birds that I'd love to try and consider a special opportunty at these locations.

4 nights S. Luangwa and 3 nts N. Luangwa would make a great combo.

If you are into canoeing, you might want to consider the Lower Zambezi. You can do walking, night drives, small boat safaris, and canoeing. One of the more special things I've done in Africa is an all day canoe trip from Sausage Tree Camp to Old Mondoro along the Chifungulu Channel.

Kafue is at its prime in Sept with the tree climbing lions seeking shade and refuge from flies by ascending the branches. Hard to find antelope species such as roan and sable can be seen in herds in Kafue, which is a special treat. The herds were present earlier in the season when I was there, but would easier to see by Sept.

You'll have an outstanding week.

I loved South Luangwa (saw my one and only aardvark there) and we used Robin Pope safaris---stated at Nsefu and Nkawali

It is classic Africa, a bit unvarnished which made it more authentic to me than some of the more frequented spots...great wildlife there...wild dogs, ellies, lions, great leopard...the whjole bit on a winding, hippo and croc filled river...a real paradise!

I was in Zambia for 3 weeks last October -- Kafue, SLNP, Luambe, and NLNP. Click on my name to find trip reports Part 1 and Part 2. Something there may strike your fancy. Happy to answer any questions you may have about those inineraries.

I actually worked for a while in the South Luangwa and think it's one of the better parks in Africa, without the crowd you get in some other parks. A great place to see leopard.

I've stayed at Kafunta River Lodge (not who I was working for) which I can highly recommend. Good chalets, great guides and friendly people. They also run Island Bush Camp for the more adventurous option.

500 for a double is quite limited. But doe to CC you might get something good.
RPS is the most expensive besides Sanctuary lodges.
Maybe you try Norman Carr who has got some more mid-range camps.
Try Old Mondhoro for a good rate.

Zambia is WILD compared to BOT!.

Wildlife is not in abundance - at least our 2 safaris there were not spoilt by sightings. The scenery in SLNP and LS is excellent. Also water activities!
