Warning from TATO- Taking of Photos of Military Training

From Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO)

Following the ongoing military trainings/mgambo in Arusha we have
constantly found ourselves at Military offices dealing with the issue of
Tourist from our members unlawfully taking photos of the training in
Arusha.

Today we had tourists from two companys arrested and
their cameras confiscated for taking photos unlawfully.
In this view, We humbly request all of you to inform all your clients and
public at large to refrain from taking photos in restricted areas
particularly on ongoing military/mgambo trainings.

Even the solders in Arusha town

We understand that it is sometimes tempting to tourists, but its
consequences are far reaching.

Be informed accordingly and inform your clients.

This rule holds for most every country:

NO soldiers, military bases, certain building, bridges, tunnels and others, unless you wish to find yourself in some foreign prison.

And know that your home country/embassy can rarely do much to assist you if arrested.

Just DO NOT DO IT!

Some areas are restricted in Tanzania, just like every other country. Why were you taking those photos in the first place? the camera can survive, but not the memory card.

Exactly. Thought this was pretty common knowledge.

Grcxx3 - Spot on!

'common knowledge' is one thing, but often it's common people who know nothing and you wonder WTF were they thinking? Often not much! In fact most every guidebook I've read has a comment on this subject under 'what not to do.'
