walking safari

Can any one help with suggesting some companies that do walking safaris in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Looking to do this in August or September.

MrBob,

Here is a list of operators that I would endorse for walking safaris:

www.bushcampcompany.com (South Luangwa, Zambia)(Walking safaris are their specialty)

www.remoteafrica.com (South Luangwa and North Luangwa, Zambia)

www.chiawa.com (Lower Zambezi, Zambia)

www.luangwariverlodge.com (South Luangwa, Zambia)

www.normancarrsafaris.com (South Luangwa, Zambia)

www.robinpopesafaris.com (South Luangwa, Zambia)

www.africanbushcamps.com (Zimbabwe and Botswana)

www.chongwe-river.com (Lower Zambezi, Zambia)

www.kasakariverlodge.com (Lower Zambezi, Zambia)

www.luangwa.com (Kafunta Safaris, South Luangwa, Zambia)

Good luck.

MrBob,

For Zimbabwe, I can recommend Leon Varley. Take a look at: http://www.walkafrica.com/meettheguides.htm

I have a couple of magazine articles about Varley plus pictures on this page:

Am I missing something. Those places you posted are all camps and lodges that seem to have bush walks out of them each day or walks between a couple bush camps.

John
Thanks. Although that is what I am what I am looking for, seems not much in the way of choices? No other backpacking or Classic portered walking safaris?

MrBob,

Maybe I am missing something...didn't realize that you were looking for walking safaris using fly camps.

Yes, all the operators I mentioned do their walking safaris either out of their camps each day or from their main camps to their bushcamps.

Bush walk. Walking safari.
Fly camp. Tented Camp. Bush camp. Seasonal Camp.

Looks like we got caught up in the general loose usage of terms in the safari industry.

I think what Mr Bob is looking for is a walking safari that carries its own accomodations/tents and food. If that is the case, there are not that many operators that do that. I can think of one in NLNP that has done this and maybe a new one this year in NLNP. Used to be a couple in SLNP, but don't know any more since the new camps. Guessing, but you might be able to get someone like Robin Pope or John Coppinger or Adrian Carr to consider one. In Zimbabwe, you will have more luck looking for guides that do this in parks like Mana Pools, Matusadona, Hwange, Chizirira. Leon Varley, John Stevens, James Varden, a number of others. Excluding a couple like Varley, they are not normal itineraries. This is to the best of my knowledge only. Must be someone that has a better handle on this.

I would hate to even ask what a full on luxury portered walking safari would cost.

I did one in Mana Pools with Nature Ways. Outstanding! You could also incorporate caneoing, which I did not do.

Robin Pope does mobile walking safaris.

Wilderness Travel in California did a Zambia mobile walking safari and I know one person who liked that.

MrBob

These are the choices I understand Varley gives. Why not email his office in Vic Falls for clarification?

1. NORMAL BACKED UP SAFARI...support vehicle, tracker, cook and camp staff to erect the camps and do the camp chores. Walks are done either from camp or you will drive to a drop off point and walk from there.

2. BACKPACKING SAFARI...no backup vehicle. All backpacking equipment is provided and clients are required to carry their own packs. Accompanied by a tracker, cook and camp crew who will help with the carrying of meals and equipment and do the camp chores.

3. PORTER SAFARI...straight backpacking but with porters.

Chizarira National Park would probably been a good choice, but I read articles referring to a lot of poaching there. So I think I would prefer to look towards Matusadona or Mana Pools, if in Zimbabwe.

luangwablondes
Do you have the website for the operator in North Luangwa N. P. that maybe doing walking safaris. I mean something in the traditional sense without mobile support of a vehicle, but with staff and setting up a new camp each day.

MrBob,

I don't believe Varley confines his safaris to Chiz and Hwange. A friend went with him to Zambia a few years ago. Varley is a good contact, anyway, to check out the possibilities.

You are correct, though...there has been a concern with poachers in Chiz for many years. Its last black rhino were moved to Hwange about 10 years ago because they couldn't be protected in Chiz. Unfortunately, that's the way it is: the wilder and more remote an area, the more likely poaching is to occur. Varley has encountered poachers and dealt with them, not long ago. But wild & remote are what attract me.

MrBob,

I know you were looking for opportunities in Zambia and Zimbabwe, but here's one in South Africa you might enjoy: http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger...g_Brochure.pdf

It sounds like you and I are looking for similar experiences, so I'm passing this link on to you.

I just received a copy of an itinerary for a walking safari in NLNP. I have been in the area of 1/2 or this and it looks like a real good walking safari. It goes along the Luangwa from the South part of the park which I haven' been in before, all the way to the North. Wow. Next to a water source the whole way. Should see lots of wildlife. And I have no connection whatsoever with the operator--

luangwablondes and somewhat paranoid to include the itinerary.

ZAMBIA
Walking safari

Day 01 NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
Arrival to North Luangwa's remote National Park. Overnight at Bushcamp.

Day 02.- NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK . BUSHCAMP.
We know we are in one of the wildest places of the world, this way many experts say it along the planet. The Park has more than 4000 square kilometres of intact nature, we will have the privilege of spending the night in his more remote zone, in the local language means LION. And it is because that zone riddled with these magnificent predators.
We will spend the day preparing our great adventure : a safari in mobile camp inside the national park. As the former explorers, we will cross by foot the wildest area of the world.
Overnight at Bushcamp.

Day 03 & 04.- FLY CAMPS – NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
We go out by foot towards the North, following the river Luangwa . During those days we will see countless groups of hippopotami. The big Crocodiles run away in the water surprised by our arrival and all day long we will see the typical local animals, Impalas, Pukus, Zebras and Buffaloes.
We will cross one of the Park gate named South Gate and our aim will be the confluence of the river Mwaleshi with the river Luangwa , a fantastic area specially protected as an important ecological interest place.
Nearby we will establish our tended camp, and around the fire we will comment on how fascinating was the day. Overnight at camp.

Day 05, 06 & 07.- FLY CAMPS – NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
We continue by foot towards the North, following the river Luangwa , in a more wooded zone. We will follow animal’s spoor that our Trackers can identify easily. Surprised on having seen our procession, the animals will run away.
At night the sounds invade our camp, but thanks to the heat of the fire we will feel secure. Overnight at camp.

Day 08 & 9.- NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK .
Overnite at bushcamp/Lodge.
We come to CAMP, following the whole Luangwa riverbed. Then we will be able to rest for two days after our wonderful adventure. You could come with us to Chifunda village, crossing the Luangwa river. On the other we stand outside of the park.
The day after, we will drive to a Lagoon, a splendid lake full of hippos and birds. Accommodation at bushcamp/Lodge.

Day 11.- NORTH LUANGWA-departure
Transfer to next destination

Include :
• Equipment for camping, Guides, carriers.
• Accommodations at fly camps and Bushcamps.
• All meals.
• Game drives and safari.

Authentic African beauty is only valuable by foot, as the former explorers did it, without tourists, WILD AND EXTRAORDINARY.

Well luangwablondes - you have definitely caught my interest with that N.Luangwa itinerary. When you feel comfortable in sharing who is leading this trip and contact information for further details, I would definitley be interested.

Pulachild,

I can't believe you read this thread thoroughly!

Nevertheless, I have to say North Luangwa attracts me greatly. A friend who has done a few Leon Varley safaris (includine one with me) has also done North Luangwa. On his experience, if I was ever to do another walking safari, it would be North Luangwa.

The walking safaris in NLNP will be done in June, July and August. Sept and Oct would probably be too hot for most people. There will be a minimum of 4 clients and a maximum of 6, with 2 scouts, one guide, one tracker and porters. The 5 nights camping not in a bush camp or lodge will be in the dome tents carried by porters.

Contact me at luangwablondes at juno dot com. The owner quoted an intro price that is really reasonable. I even had to check if that included park fees and it did.

The introductory price for the walking safari is $1900 euros or the present approximate conversion is $2500, including park fees.

That’s a smokin’ price for any walking safari. This is portered to boot, with some nites at bush camps and a lodge. The competition, the Mwaleshi river bush camps start at least $330pppn on up to well over around $400pppn. Maybe someone else may have some better numbers on the high end. If you ever wanted to go to NLNP, these are the kind of prices you dreamed of and will never see again.

Damn, I’m good. Just being persistent and this is what I turned up.

The operator of this walking safari is Remote Wildlife, owners of Delia Camp and Nkalamo Bush Camp in North Luangwa. A description of this itinerary WITH camp names can be found on their website, www.infoafrica.net/OurTrips.htm.
