Visit Meknes from Fez, or Fez from Meknes?
Planning a trip to Morocco in March / April. I know that many people visit Meknes as a day trip from Fez, but I am wondering whether it might be better to base in Meknes and visit Fez as a day trip or maybe two day trips. Fez obviously has much more to offer but Meknes seems less intense and therefore perhaps a more relaxing place to base for a few days.
If it makes a difference, I will be starting in Marrakesh and coming to Fez / Meknes from Merzouga. I will have a car but will probably use the train or bus to travel back and forth between Meknes and Fez.
Thank you in advance for your input!

We did a two week self drive trip two weeks ago and did a few days in Fez and then backtracked a stayed a night/day in Meknes. The IBIS hotel in Meknes is fabulous-not like an Ibis in France or the UK. It was a 5 minute walk to the old town area and the hotel itself was beautiful, easy to find, had a super breakfast and had adult beverages at night!!!!
Be sure and go out to Voulikis(sp?) the Roman ruins outside of Meknes-breathtaking area and very interesting.
Our favorite family city was Essaouria down on the sea-simply a jewel of a city and well worth several days.

Thank you for your advice. I am leaning even more toward Meknes now.
I have already looked at Riad d'Or. Looks good. But the Ibis may be better for parking. If you stay inside the medina, where do you park a car?
Essaouira was on the short list but did not make it into the final plan, unfortunately. The geographic outlier.
Will definitely see Volubilis.
