Valley of Kings from Cairo-Possible?
I am not terribly familiar with the geography of Egypt, and I will be visiting Cairo in January with my family. We want to visit the Valley of the Kings (they just opened a new tomb!) and were wondering if it is possible to visit it from Cairo in one long day. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hi. I am not an expert on this, as our family is not going until Sept. However, I was looking into this trip myself. The best way to get there looks to be by overnight train from Cairo to Luxor. It is pretty far down there. I think it would be a very long drive as well as it was going to take over 2 hours for us to drive from Alexandria to Cairo, and these two cities are much closer. I belive the official tourism site for Egypt is www.touregypt.net. They have some maps and other information about the monuments. Good Luck.

Yes it is possible. You would need to leave Cairo early (the first Egypt Air flight leaves at 6:15am) and return late (the last Egypt Air flight departs Luxor at 10:50pm.) This would give you a good portion of the day to explore the Valley of the Kings. There are so many wonderful things to see in and around Luxor that I would highly advise spending at least one night there. The Luxor temple is truly magical after sunset. But if you must do a day trip it certainly is technically possible, but not very relaxing.
