Update on Resumption of Business at JKIA by Kenya Tourism Board

Following last week's fire incident at Jomo Kenyatta Airport (JKIA) that caused the disruption of business, the Kenya government and the private sector has continued to put in place measures aimed at ensuring resumption of business at the airport.

The current update towards this end is as follows:

Air Navigation Services
The ruling Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) classifies JKIA as now open for all passenger operations. International operations have fully resumed as of August, 11th, 2013 with the airport handling 19, 919 passengers on 11th August, 2013 against a usual average of 16,000 passengers in a day. 67 international arrivals and 70 international departures operated on the same day. All international airlines operating from JKIA have resumed operations with SN Brussels having been the last to resume operations. Swiss Airlines which was previously landing once a week has resumed it’s twice - a - week schedule.

Cargo aircraft operations
Cargo aircraft operating time has been revised from 9:00pm to 6:00am strictly. This is to avoid congestion. Cargo aircraft requiring only crew change and fuel (e.g. Lufthansa) has been advised to use Moi Airport Mombasa in the interim.

Passenger Operations:
All arriving international passengers are being cleared at full operational tents which are also hosting essential services like Port Health, Immigration, baggage collection area, Customs and screening machines. Exit of passengers is via Unit 3 Arrivals.

Back logs in the hotels are expected to clear by end of day. There are buses provided to passengers to facilitate the transfer of transit passengers to the domestic terminal. Most airlines are now using bigger aircrafts to alleviate the pressure of backlog of inward bound passengers outside the country (Dubai, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Cairo, West Africa, etc.).

Safety of passengers
Passenger screening areas are functional for ease of transfer of passengers. All other security checks in the airport are in place as usual. Enhanced signage in key areas is in place to assist passengers locate the various areas.

We shall continue giving you more update as we receive.

Thanks for the update.
I'll be transferring from Amsterdam to Liliongwe, with an 1.5 hr layover at NBO.
Do you know if travelers will need to go through security screening again, making an international transfer? I'm bringing carry on bags only, and was hoping to buy toiletries and duty free at AMS, but I would hate to have to throw them away at security screening at NBO.

Everything at the airport is back to normal like 95%. So security screening for yourself and your luggage is being carried out as usual. Bon Voyage

Lucky you to be doing only carryon, as 1.5/hrs layover might be tight even under normal scheduling, so hope your inbound from AMS is on time.

Every flight out of JKIA, goes thru gate security - shoes, belts, jewelry, other* - so likely they may also be checking liquids over 100ml/3oz.

Unless you need the toiletries/duty free for this onward segment, maybe consider purchasing on your homebound flight, as I do. Seems items packed in duty free bags are permitted as carryon thru AMS security even to the States. Though they still don't permit 'water' - go figure???

*last flight from JKIA in Nov, though I checked my main bag seemed there was something in my carryon that the agent kept putting thru the machine. After about 6x passes, she found a stub-nose tiny scissor that they removed/tossed into the trash about which I certainly didn't fuss. Needless to say, this is permitted by the TSA, but I was surprised this item was even in the bag as I had no idea when it could have even been placed inside as that same bag had been thru JKIA screening for years and never noticed. Very strange indeed.
