TUNISIA - ITIN HELP FOR AUGUST 10 DAYS

Thanks in advance for your help...

We are a group of friends traveling to Tunisia in mid-August. Hoping for some advice on itinerary planning, as the books and websites are only bringing us part of the way!

We are looking for a relaxed vacation while having an authentic experience (rather than the big resorts). Budget-wise, we are not on a shoestring but would like to stay moderate, with maybe a splurge or two if it's special.

1) Arrive Tunis evening
>> We were advised to stay in Sidi Bou Said instead of Tunis. However, hotels seem few or expensive -- Dar Said seems steep at USD 200
>> Any suggestions either in SBS or whether we should base ourselves elsewhere?
2) Tunis - see Carthage
3) Tunis - see Tunis
>> Should we daytrip to Dougga?

4) Sousse
>> Drive from Tunis -- is there anywhere we should stop to see along the way?
5) Sousse

6) Djerba
>> Drive from Sousse or train to Gabes & then ferry -- any preference? Does the ferry leave from Gabes? Is there a website or further info on the ferry somewhere?
>> Anywhere to stop along the way if we drive?
>> Is Djerba worthwhile or should we skip it to stay in Sousse & daytrip to El Jem &/or Monastir &/or Kairouan?

7) Tent in desert - Ksar Ghilane or Douz
>> Drive from Djerba to Relais Pansea or Mehari Zaafrane -- Pansea looks fabulous, any opinions on Mehari?

8) Back to Sousse
9) Sousse
10) Depart Tunis
