My wife and I are cruising with a group of friends from Istanbul to Cape Town this November (2010) and will visit Tunis (port of La Goulette) on November 16, arriving at 8 am and departing at 8 pm. Unfortunately we are only in Tunisia for that one day. I have two questions ...
As I have read, the religious festival of Aid el Kebir occurs on November 16 this year. Could you please reply to this email and tell me which type of tourist sites will be open versus closed? I have read that most things do close but am not sure how strictly the holiday is observed. We would like to visit the Bardo Museum and the central Medina in Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, and Carthage and its museum. If they are closed, I'd appreciate your feedback on alternative places we might visit.
Secondly, any problem visiting all these sites by taxi? Are taxis readily available (and safe) or should we rent a taxi for the day. I'd rather rent as we go because we can then decide how long to visit each site or area. Thanks.
