Travel to the Middle East?

I love old ruins and would love to take a trip to the Middle East to see some. I am afraid for my safety though, so are there countries in the Middle East that are safe for Americans? I would love to see the country of Georgia and see the mountains and scenery and old ruins and old architecture. What countries should I visit and what shouldn't be missed? Thanks!

You should consider Cyprus. It's not exactly European nor is it Middle Eastern, (as I understand it) but an interesting hybrid. Extremely safe, very hospitable people, wonderful ruins and plenty of history. Beaches galore, if you want that kind of vacation. English is the second language here, so it could hardly be easier for an American visitor. I've been here for six months in temporary residency and haven't run out of sights to see or things to do yet. And should you want to travel onward to Israel or Greece there are cheap flights available.

Georgia is considered Asia.

For ruins Turkey wins it... even more so than Greece. Also has mountains, amazing architecture and lovely beaches. And it's safe.

You have an odd definition of the Middle East! Georgia and Armenia are usually referred to as the Caucasus - not quite Europe, not quite Asia. I enjoyed visiting both, and neither should cause you to worry about security. Start here for my TR: http://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com/...ttered-batumi/

Of course, Turkey is a great destination (no, Greece is not part of the Middle East). Syria used to be a good destination in the ME, but alas, not right now! However, Jordan and Lebanon should still be fine. Click on my name for my ME TR.
