travel from Australia to Dubai, Turkey, Greece and Egpyt
Hey would really appreciate some ideas.
We would like to travel from Australia to Turkey, Greece (Athens and maybe Mykonos ) and Egypt via Dubai in September 2011. We are a Mother and Daughter team and probably would like to do 2 - 3 days Dubai (on way over or back doesn't matter what order we do this by the way) 8 days Turkey, 8 days Greece including Mykonos and 10 days Eygpt. Does this sound do able? Egypt is the main player here.
Any recommendations would be Appreciated

Just keep in mind that September is HOT in Cairo, and will be significantly hotter in Dubai. This may not matter if you are planning only shopping there. In which case I would do the Dubai time at the end.
I am working with a mother and daughter group from OZ now that is coming in December, and just this morning told them not to plan to ship things back that they buy in Egypt as it is difficult to do at best, and not inexpensive. They too are headed to Turkey after, so you need to plan when and where you will shop if you need to drag what you buy with you on the rest of the trip. If I were you, from my limited experience with these different countries, I might suggest going in this route
1 - Turkey 2 - Greece (will be pretty easy to ship things from Greece) 3 - Egypt 4 - Dubai
This way what you buy in Turkey and Greece can be shipped, leaving you free to carry what you buy in Egypt and Dubai. Or Egypt - Greece - Turkey - Dubai

I am Australian and travelled from Australia to Cairo. I had trouble booking airfares due to the cities I wished to go through (I had decided on Kuala Lumpur or Singapore for a week on return). Some of the airlines were codeshares which I didn't want. I originally wanted to go on Singapore's A380 but the last leg, Dubai to Cairo I believe, was going to be on Egypt Air and I didn't want that. Some of the stopover times were up to 10 hours so check around the different airlines.
I can only say that Egypt in 10 days would be doable - I have not been to the other countries. My sister in law is continually telling me to go to Turkey... she thought it was wonderful.

MissGreen - your SIL is right! Turkey is one of my favorite places! You should definitely go.
travelbug2011 - 8 days in Turkey is fine. You can either try to see everything in a whirlwind, or limit your touring for a more relaxing time. I would definitely recommend visiting Istanbul (2-3+ days), Ephesus (1 day), and Cappadocia (1-2 days). You can fly to Cappadocia and fly into Izmir to see Ephesus. Other places to consider would be Pamukule or one of the seaside towns (Antalya, Bodrum - there are several).
I have never been to Greece, but based on the friends I know who have gone - I think 8 days might be too much unless you are doing a Greek Island cruise or have some specific things to see away from Athens. Most felt 1 day in Athens was enough. Again, this is only what I have heard from others.
And 10 days is Egypt is fine. Time to see Cairo fully, enjoy a Nile cruise and maybe even a quick trip to the a Red Sea resort.
As for Dubai - it's not my favorite place and I can't imagine spending 2-3 days there as part of a vacation (I've had to do it for rugby competitions). After seeing Turkey and Eygpt, I can't think of any touristy stuff there that I would want to do. But that's me.

Now I'm a Bali expert and can book my holidays there no prob but i'm just trying to get my head around me booking all of this myself (which im sure is easy enough )
But I'm thinking of maybe booking the Egypt sector with a travel company just for the whole guided thing and then doing the rest myself.
Any thoughts????

Turkey blew me away... amazing even more so than Greece. Found in Greece it was simply bothersome traveling between islands and once where going, lots of climbing winding alleys, and not an elevator to be found in small B&B-type hotels. Donkeys carried our bags; even your wheelie luggage takes a beating on those streets. Public transport was a horror and forget a schedule. Turkey far surpasses, when it came to ruins, food, transport and people - outstanding... and they know about "shipping" stuff home - all those carpets.
Likewise, Egypt blows you away with it's history, though be prepared for everyone having their hands out for tips (baksheesh) what everyone who's been mentions. But, put that aside, smile and learn to say La shukran (no thanks) often. Can't vouch for shipping anything from here, so listen to Debbie.
Dubai... well, if only to shop* and stay indoors... fine, but it would have been better had we all visited 10/yrs ago. Now it's just a big, modern, polluted and traffic jammed city. Guess, they had no option but to prepare for when the "oil runs out."
*But for the Gold souk (and you'd better know what you're doing), prices were much the same as any major fashion capital around the world... no bargains!
