First, I would suggest you keep all your questions about this trip under one thread. It'll be easier for you to find, for anyone to answer and follow the progress of your trip/planning.
There is a flight from JNB to Hoedspruit, but once there, where are you going? To Kruger proper, private reserve, which camp/lodge - you'll need transfer from airport to wherever.
You can also drive - about 5-hrs.
Give us more details of what you are thinking so we can advise with more information.

Hello Sandi..sorry for the mish mash ..this is my first time on a forum not to mention my first time in South Africa!! I'm staying at Amukela Game Lodge for a few days enroute home to Oz but I have to make my own way from Joburg airport to Hoedspruit where I'll be collected. I've been onto the Translux bus site but cant see a route map or fares and sent off an email but have had no reply..any assistance would be greatly appreciated.. Elly in Oz

Actually, I disagree with Sandi. I would be very likely to read and answer a question put by itself and titled clearly like this one is, but I might not even see this question if it were buried in a thread titled something like "questions about my safari" or "please help with trip planning". I'd say do it whichever way is most sensible to you, Elly.
That said, I don't know the answer to this particular question.

Hi Elly,
You can definitely fly -- I believe both Nationwide and SAA fly from Joburg to Hoedspruit.
Don't know about bus services, I'm afraid. It would be a seven to eight hour trip -- a long, long time to spend on a bus, IMO. I'd fly if I were you.
Cheers,
Julian

Elly,
I have also been looking into ways to get from Joburg to Hoedspruit. The only airline that I have been able to locate is SAA. For mid-April when we are traveling, they offer 2 flights daily. Nothing was available at Nationwide's website for getting to Hoedspruit.
Good luck!

I'm also trying to figure out how to get there. I know you can fly but I'm afraid of flying so it's got to be bus. I did find a very good resource for the Kruger and transport services from Johannesburg: http://www.krugerparkbackpackers.com/intro.html
Unfortunately I still can't figure out how to get there on the bus!!!

I realize this is too late to assist the person with original question. There is bus service to Hoedspruit provided by City To City/TransLux. For reasons I do not understand, Hoedspruit does not appear in their online booking. You must call their reservations or purchase your ticket at a retail outlet (Game and Checkers stores). Currently it is about an 8 hour trip and costs about R280.
If you are not faint hearted, you can also get there using public taxis. It will probably be faster and cheaper, but you never know how long it will take to fill the taxi. You want to travel to "The Oaks" and from there get a taxi to Hoedspruit. In Pretoria, the taxis to The Oakes leave from the Belle Ombrey rank - just north of center city. I don't know what rank they leave from in Joberg.

Sure Southican Africa Airwyas (SAA) flys JNB to Hoedspruit (HDS). Two flights each way every day, about $150 each way,
http://www.flysaa.com/za/en/flightSe...t_locale=en_ZA
Done it several times, might again come this May. Not sure if Federal Air or other airlines fly JNB-HDS
Your game lodge Amukela knows every way possible to get to them, drop them an email or call. (If they can't help you, get another lodge/camp!!!).

SAA flights between Jo'Burg and HDS are cheap.
Here's my tip; if you're planning to stay in one of the lodges in private reserves near Kruger, then it's a very good idea to opt for lodges in Klaserie or Timbavati. The airport is right next door (so to speak), so you transfer costs amount to 0$. What I always do is book two camps; one in Klaserie, one in Timbavati, and the lodges gladly take me from one place to the other for free as well.
You can also rent a car at HDS. Haven't done this yet, but basically it means you could visit Drakensbergen or Kruger NP on your own, then leave your car at HDS airport again and extend with a stay in the lodges of private reserves nearby. Sounds like a great vacation to me!
Ciao,
J.

This thread was originally from '06. But to add, there are shuttle buses. If I was on a budget trip, not self drive ready and prepared for some inconvenience, the shuttle sounds fine. But flights are pretty cheap.
