My husband and I are thinking of visiting the Holy Land and Petra at the end of June/beginning of July. Is it just too hot to enjoy these places at that time? I don't really enjoy hot weather but this is the most convenient time for my husband to travel this year. We could always wait and visit at a different time another year.

Well it usually is hot in Israel at that time of the year, humid in Tel Aviv, better in higher elevations and near the sea. Hot meaning in the upper 80s and 90s F ,not typically 100 and higher unless you go into the desert or to Eilat.I haven't been to Petra but that should be even hotter.
It depends on where you're from and what you can tolerate, I guess. Outdoor sites can be rough since the sun is so strong, yet most have shaded areas where you can rest, Stores, restaurants, museums are air conditioned.
How are you planning to travel, independently or with a tour> A tour could be unpleasant I guess because you go where they tell you to go even if you feel hot and tired, Traveling independently gives you more options. What are your must see sites and how many days do you have for this trip?
Other times of the year especially April and October can be the most pleasant, but those are also when major holidays typically fall (though this year they're over by October)making flights and hotels more expensive and roads and sites more crowded.
While June/July is in the hot season, it is a bit cooler than in August. Petra, in Jordan, is at a higher elevation than Eilat across the bay area. It also has very low humidity, so it's pleasant in that respect. I would not hesitate to go the dates you propose. Bring good walking shoes and drink ALOT (a gallon over that day) so you don't get dehydrated.
