Interesting, canceled by the federal government -- there was another post recently about the perceived safety situation at NBO. I've been snooping around on delta.com recently doing some research on a trip to Africa for next May or August, and very little is coming up, maybe b/c not everything is loaded (I wanted into NKC and back from DKR, and there's very little availability). I think I'm leaning to using United miles to go to Cape Verde, Azores and Madeira in May, and will wait to find out about a possible Africa trip using DL miles in August, so I hope DL commences those flights soon.

>>I'm wondering if there's more to it.<<
Maybe an AF plane falling out of the sky.
Can't believe it's security at NBO that many international carriers seem fine with. Besides, this Delta flight has a stop at DKR (pick-up/drop-off paxs)... any better/worse than NBO?
All too strange, only a day prior! Maybe this route is just not meant to be!

Very strange, but expected. JKIA is still not ready for a US carrier.
Delta have been running full page adverts in the Nation for the last week, which cost around US$8200 a pop, plus promotions on radio and local press. Let's see what the local Dailies say tomorrow

Roadwarrior... i'm curious why you would say that "JKIA is still not ready for a US carrier" but that it is acceptable for a British or Dutch carrier.
Are Americans more special? More fussy?
What's the difference?

The US State Department has travel warnings to many places, example Haiti, that DL services. I'm sure there are others, but I've been researching a trip to Haiti lately, and there's a fairly severe travel warning. In addition to DL, I am aware of two other US carriers (American and Spirit) that service Haiti. So, I don't know why they'd treat Kenya differently (but, then again, the only consistency in US foreign policy is its inconsistency).

I think the stop in Dakar is more dangerous. Especially since you have passengers on the plane and a cleaning crew etc coming on the plane. It would not take much to make that an international issue.
I discussed that issue with my wife while we were sitting on the ground. I looked around and noticed that 90% of the passengers were zombie looking after waking up to land...I myself was a little out of it. I thought that my reaction time to a hijack would be limited.
Maybe the recent unknown issue with the Air France flight has something to do with it?

More on this from USAToday ... Kenya protests the decision, Homeland Security is blamed for acting late and communicating poorly.
The cancellation is blamed on "a credible threat to civil aviation in East Africa. At this time, the current threat is too significant to permit these flights."

Sandi..."Sounds like something that would come from a room containing too much testosterone and small willies!"
I do not know what you mean by that...but there is a significant threat to any international flight. There are people who want do do us harm. I appreciate the fact that there are people who may be looking out for my best interest.

All new routes are subject to government approval (I assume on both ends of the route) and it is not uncommon that a route can not be approved...don't know if they had the permission and it was retracted or is anyone sure that DL just had really poor load factors and it was a business decision...now with the merger with NWA it is pretty easy to reroute passengers via AMS and keep the booking in the "family"...just speculation...
