Timing of Great Migration in Northern Serengeti

This probably seems like a simple question but I am getting conflicting information from various travel agents and reading posts & blogs. I plan to be in the Northern Serengeti in early September. Will some the of the migration still be in the area or will they be in Kenya by then? One travel agent tells me no migration in Tanzania in August and September and the other says that this is a great time in the Northern Serengeti to see migration and Mara River crossings. Help!

I'm just guessing that the "no migration in Tanzania in August and September" agent is based in Kenya or has closest ties with Kenya. The "this is a great time in the Northern Serengeti" agent is based in Tanzania or has closest ties with Tanz.

Having visited both countries in Sept and Kenya in Aug, either is good. In fact lots of times the wildes go back and forth. It is not solely a one way street for them.

Rains and weather dictate which would be ideal, but you generally have to book well before you know about rains and weather.

There are other factors to consider such as cost and crowds. N. Serengeti tends to be more expensive with fewer people. Generally N. Serengeti is accessed by flying more often than driving and if you do drive more days are needed. The Mara is more accessible by driving, but flying to the Mara is common too, especially the conservancies, which are a Mara option but not a Serengeti option. Also consider what other activities, parks, wildlife you are interested in. That may point you to one country or the other.

If time and $ permits, you can visit both N. Serengeti and the Mara. Check with your agent on the best logistics to go between.

Whichever you choose, the best strategy to try to see a crossing (which you mention) is to allow enough days to devote many hours to waiting at the river. I would not stay less than 4 nts in N. Serengeti or the Mara if a river crossing were my goal.

Good luck.

This chart shows best times to go to all the parks in S. and E. Africa. The little * asterisks in the green boxes are for the migration. I'm no expert and do understand this is hard to predict.
