Time to 'spare' in Spain, should we go to Morocco?

I have posted this over on the Europe site, but thought it worth posting here too.

We are on no real time restraints and will be in Europe for 3.5 months. We should be in Spain & Portugal in early September. Do you think its worth catching a ferry to Morocco and if so, for how long? Its probably the closest we will ever be..................and to be completely honest, a look around a market and a couple of meals would be nearly highlight enough.

We'd love to hear your thoughts.

thanks as always.

If you have the time, why not? But I would recommend going to Fez, and not just to Tangier, which is where the ferry diembarks. I spent 10 days in Morocco and Tangier was the low light of my time spent there. However, you defenitely could look around a market and have a few meals in Tangier, but prepare to be hassled by persons touting various goods and services.

Great idea but, as mentioned, take enough time to get away from Tangier. Get to Fez or Marrakesh for a more authentic (dare I say "real"?) experience.

I agree - head for Fez. But also try to spend long enough to drive through the mountains and spend a night in the desert. If you go as far south as Marrakech, visit Essaouira as well. Do a search on Morocco here and you will turn up some trip reports.

This has come up before but it's been awhile! I concur with the others - in fact, if you can only get to Tangiers, I'd skip it (IMHO, Tangiers is as representative of Morocco as Times Square is of the United States!) I'd head for Fez and Marrakech.

Loved Morocco, esp the night train to Marrakesh, Atlas Mountains by bus. Fez is quieter than Marrakesh. Once you see the architecture there you understand Spanish design more clearly. Actually the Alhambra seemed sort of anti-climatic....
