What day of the week and what time of the day? If it is just a few hours, I would say NO. The traffic in Dubai is horrible and if you cannot allocate time to go out to the Burg or the souks,etc.-whats the point? The shops and eateries at the airport will keep you busy I think if it is just a few hours.
What if my layover is 16 hours? From 8 a.m. to midnight? On a Saturday. Any suggestions for where to get a day-room or how to explore much appreciated. Is it possible to hire a driver? Particularly interested in mosques/harbor.
I have no advise particularly as you have not stated how many hours and time/day.

Anyway - be aware that these cheap kitchy (but somehow nice) pearl and paillettes stiching cushions and table runners most probably have been produced by child labour considering the price and "art work".
Have a look for decent stuff and ask yourself where/from whom products might have been made.

Julia, there is a hotel inside the Dubai airport where you can rent a room for short periods of time. I looked at it when I was there in January but did not stay there. Here's a link:
