Hello.
My husband and I are thinking of traveling from D.C. to Morocco with our 10 month old and wanted to get advice from travelers on logistics:
-Would we be able to buckle her car seat into a taxi?
-Do hotels have "pack-in-plays" or would we need to bring our own?
-What cities and towns would be easiest with a stroller/bjorne?
Any other thoughts are welcome.
Thanks, Kirsten

As both a mother and grandmother of 4 under the age of 9,
I can definitely tell you that I would not travel to Morocco with a 10 month old.
Morocco is a beautiful place but you have to understand that a lot of the places you will want to visit are going back to the 900's. The old city in both Marrakech and Fes require
lot's of walking narrow streets with lots of people around - not so easy with a stroller. Bathrooms are not like those in the US and definitely not child friendly. Which cities would you like to visit, how long do you plan on going for, and when. The riads are not suitable for young children. Taxis are old and seat belts don't always work.
That being said, if you can stay in a top hotel in either of those cities, although quite expensive, you may be able to get a small crib and a comfortable place to be after a long day. I would be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
Can you put the baby in a backpack style carrier or a baby sling? That would be much easier than trying to carry a carseat style carrier or deal with a stroller.

What's a "pack and play"? A foldup playpen? Can you simply put the baby on an extra blanket on the floor (she's a kid, the floor won't hurt her, especially on a blanket)? For sleeping, contact potential hotels and ask if they have a crib you could use (some hotels do, some don't). Otherwise, can you simply put her on the floor on the blanket and build a wall of pillows up around the edgets of the blanket? Sorry, I don't have kids and am just guessing from what I've seen and read about othe people doing.
Bathrooms would be less of a concern for a 10 month old than for a kid who was potty trained (they're not trained yet at that age, right?). One parent hold onto the kid while the other parent uses the facilities, then switch. Practice changing a diaper without a changing table.
As for the car seat, you could likely hire a car service to/from the airports to ensure that you had a car seat or a car that should work with a car seat.
Just a few ideas to consider. I'm not a parent so I don't know the logistics of the kid, but I think that if you want to go that there's likely a way to work around your concerns and you're not crazy at all. It might be difficult but I would think it's entirely doable if you're willing to improvise as you go. I would suggest against the stroller though, I've never seen one of those work so well on old streets.
Most all mothers outside of Western countries/first-world (or an older girl-child) if/when outdoors will hold babies in a body sling, close to them, so guess the Bjorne would work if you want to be doing this day-in/day-out.
gotta be creative sometimes and it worked for many of of grand and great-grand parents) for the child, as well as safe transport from one area of Morocco to another, personally, I'd wait till the child is at least 2/yrs, out of diapers, eats regular food and is tolerant of different surroundings.
Strollers would work, but don't expect smooth sidewalks, rather these being uneven and dirty with lots of crowds (people, animals, vehicle).
Then you have to consider availability of diapers, baby food and other items, which no doubt are available in some fashion, but you may question the quality and safety of them. Though local children do fine, your little one may protest.
Vehicles rarely have seat-belts even for adults, if they work, so trying to install a carseat would be big problem.
The walled cities are old, very very old, with narrow winding alleyways, lots of stray cats/dogs about, dirty and noisy. The small Riads (B&B-type hotels) are not suited for children unless some have been remodeled to what we'd consider Western standards.
Unless you find a tour operator that can guarantee hi-end hotels (even a Riad which are really quite charming), and these do exist in major cities, though at steep prices that can assure all the needs you have (i.e., a crib and not a pillow placed in an opened drawer... though that does still work
We were in Morocco last month. I agree 100% with 4holdings and I would not take a baby that age on the trip.
I also would not put a baby on the floor. They can definitely roll at that age. We stayed in a very nice Riad and even there you see the occasional spider or bug across the floor.
Having a baby really limits the things that you could do.
The sanitary conditions were not good outside of the Riad and I was amazed and saddened by the number of stray, malnourished animals on the streets. They were also burning crop fields for insect infestations and the drifting smoke just filled your lungs.
I would wait until the child is a little older and has all immunizations.
We had a wonderful time there but I wouldn't take a little one.
i know these postings were a long time ago, but what did you decide? we are toying with going to morocco with our 11 mo old in december. can you let me know either way, and if you went how it was.
thanks so much
