The Saxon in Johannesburg ??

DE,<BR><BR>Had I known you were going to post this seconds before my latest post, I would have addressed my post directly to you and kept away unwanted competition.<BR><BR>Anyway, I hear the Saxon is a great hotel but I have no experience with it. I believe the best hotels in Johannesburg are supposed to be The Saxon Hotel, The Grace Hotel, The Westcliff Hotel and The Michelangelo Hotel.<BR><BR>Check out www.luxurylink.com and see if you like the Michelangelo. I am sure you can stay there for half the price as The Saxon Hotel.<BR><BR>I just checked travelocity.com and they want $381 USD per night for The Saxon. While I am sure you can probably find it for less, it is probably still going to be around $350 USD per night for the standard room.<BR><BR>You may want a junior suite at the 5* Michelangelo in Sandton (same area as The Saxon) for possibly $150 per night. <BR><BR>Whatever you decide, good luck.

You can get a room for only $237 USD per night (at least for the dates that I checked in June).<BR><BR>Don't know when you are planning on going but it is worth a look.

MANY THANKS AGAIN ROCCO, for your as always informative info. You do dig around for very good pricings. Our trip if all goes as planned will tentatively happen in July or August. I look forward to the adventure. I will check out the links you suggest and also look into some of the other hotels you mention. <BR>The Saxon was suggested from a tour operator who knows we prefer very good accomodations.

I stayed at the Saxon 2 years ago and found the experience very dull. The accommodation and the facilities are fabulous (all suites) but everything was so hushed that we felt afraid to talk. At the bar there was noone else to talk to and so lasted there for only one drink. In the restaurant we had to revert to whisper-talk. In contrast you can step out of Michelangelo straight into a buzzing shopping mall.

The Saxon property started life as a private residence, and this previous incarnation is what greatly influences the atmosphere. It is very small, secluded, and specialises in celebs not wanting to be disturbed. Hence it's where Madiba chose to stay when writing the Long Walk to Freedom. Personally the architecture does nothing for me and I agree with king's posting about hushed atmosphere. All in all - for a holiday I don't think it's right - and the price is also not shy. If you want pampering and relaxation, go to the Westcliff, for cosmopolitan buzz and personal attention - the Grace; and the Michelangelo for convenience, facilities and service. All three are really luxurious to boot.

I stayed at The Westcliff, which is a nice hillside hotel, with some panoramic views over the zoo, with comfortable rooms with top furnishings. Its secluded, but more vibrant than the Saxon. I also visited the Michelangelo, which is right on Sandton Square, a great location, and adjacent to one of Johannesburg's best shopping malls. With very few safe places to wander in Johannesburg, I found myself spending time in this mall and dining at Sandton Square (at The Butcher Shop), and I think I will stay at Michelangelo during my next visit.
