Thailand, Africa, Positano (Italy), Tahiti

Thailand, Africa, Positano (Italy), Tahiti

We would love to travel to them all - which is most impossible.

Any suggestions in getting a little of everything, or something that would give us the adventure of a Safri, the uniquness of Thailand, the beauty of Positano, and the great snorkeling & OTB in Tahiti.

We are thinking ahead for a 2006 trip, and we will have 3-4 weeks.

I know this is a lot...but we can all dream, right?

Might not be as hard as you think. Try these websites:
http://www.staralliance.com
http://www.rtwinfo.co.uk

Your destinations are (or will be) all served by airlines in the Star Alliance network (United, Lufthansa, etc) which next year will add South African Airways. An RTW ticket might be just the thing; the cost varies according to how many miles you travel (26,000 - 39,000) and where you buy the ticket. You could probably string something like (Home)-JFK-FCO-FRA-JNB-SIN-SYD-PPT-LAHome) for something close to the 26,000 mile RTW fare on Star.

People do these things all the time; dreaming is free, anyway.

Hi. I have been to all of these places. I think a good fit for you would be South Africa. You will get the safari experience absolutely. There is fantastic snorkeling (you can even swim with sharks), look into Rocktail Bay Lodge, which in its way is just as exotic as the OTB's and definitely not as touristy. Unique? In South Africa you can do anything from sleeping in a Zulu village to tented safaris to European-like excursions in Cape Town to hiking in the Drakensburg mountains. And you can drive yourself. With 3-4 weeks you will have the trip of a lifetime!

Thanks to you both for your input. We are just thinking (or dreaming) at this point, and trying to figure out what makes the most sense, trying to cover all our dreams in one trip.

Lin, Thanks for recommending South Africa, I have read very little about SA, and now that you point out the things we are looking for, it looks like something we should look into more.

If anyone else has any feedback, more is always welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I have been to all the places on you list except Africa (that is next on MY list!). One thing to keep in mind that weather varies in all these places at different times of year, and the best month in one place may not be the best month in another. Very true for Positano and Thailand: December and January which are perfect in Thailand, are cold and rainy in Positano and many of the better restaurants and hotels are closed. The reverse is true in September: rainy in Thailand but great in Positano.

Tahiti is generally at its best in the late spring, summer and early fall, it is quite rainy from November through the end of March.

Not sure what the best month is for African safaris, I am guessing the winter months, which again, are great in Thailand but not the coast of Italy (although Rome is quite beautiful in winter).

Therefore, your best option may be to spread these out over several trips. One benefit is that you will earn FF miles for your next trip, and can save up in the periods between one trip and another.

It is hard to replicate all the places on your list as what makes them unique is the fact that they ARE unique, i.e. there is nothing else like them. However, two places to consider might be (i) Australia and (2) India. In one trip you would find a remarkable range of beach, wildlife (esp India and Sri Lanka for that matter), friendly people, great culture (a bit more so in India), great food, etc. There is nothing quite like the cliff setting of Positano, but there is some spectacular coastline in Australia.

I know this is an Africa forum, but since you tossed in Positano, I just wanted to tell you to save your money if you are thinking about booking at Le Sirenuse. My fiance and I spent about $750 USD per night to stay there in May and thought it was entirely overrated. We refer to it as Le Siren-useless.
