Ten Bompas - Johannesburg

Hi All,

Would anyone be able to recommend Ten Bompas Hotel? I am going to be on my honeymoon in July, and want to stay somewhere ulta luxurious for the 1 night we have in Johannesburg. The hotel looks very nice, and I like the customized look of each suite. I appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Thanks!

Elliott

Elliot,

Check predetorbiologist's recent trip report to South Africa and Botswana. I think he stayed at the ten bompas and enjoyed his stay there.

Hi

Have you checked if there are any reviews on TripAdvisor? I have posted a trip report with some pictures from Joburg on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/johannesburg_...frica_2004.htm . Maybe you can get some info there if you have time for sightseeing. Have a great honeymoon

A couple of years ago a work colleague/friend stayed there after I had looked at their website, and I took a look at his suite. Without going onto their website I can't remember the name of the theme he chose, I think it was "high-tech" one. Anyway, it looked very impressive and he was very happy. It included a very nice separate shower with all the bells and whistles, which is a plus for me when I travel.

What impressed me most though was the complimentary mini-bar! Unprecedented in my own experience. And I think laundry is also complimentary, but I may be wrong about that.

He didn't eat at the restaurant (except perhaps breakfast), but it has had good reviews for both its food and cellar. I don't know how it rates at present.

A possible negative is that it is not within easy walking distance of much, except for a small shopping centre that is just up the road. But by taxi or rental car it's not far from Rosebank, Hyde Park (which I realise now is probably also walking distance), and Sandton City/Nelson Mandela Square.

I've just remembered. For that time, and also last year when I got a quote for someone else who ended up staying at the Hilton (loyalty member reasons!), I got a much better rate by calling them and asking if they had a "special". And much better than what was advertised on their website.

That first time it was called a "winter special" and I'd say that almost certainly there will be something similar this winter. The next time I got a quote it was mid-December, so I guess they had some other name for it!

I've just looked up my e-mails. In May 2003 the rate was R1200 incl. breakfast. This last Dec 2005 it was R1600, but compared with an advertised rate of R2400. I think those are room prices, not per person, but I may be wrong. So well worth an Int. call. If you don't ask, you don't get!

Elliott: I stayed at the Ten Bompas in March. I can definitely recommend it. The suites are large with very nice bedding. They deliver a bottle of champagne with chocolate covered berries as a welcome. The in room bar is included in your rate. The grounds and swimming pool are lovely. Service was excellent, including laundry and having a driver when needed. I have posted what I wrote in my trip report to give more info, as you will notice it focuses quite a bit on being funky and edgy. I thought that is fun but be aware that it is not the typical old school luxury of more traditional hotels -- this is aiming to be more hip and urban fun than traditional. There are other good choices if you want the more reserved and consistent luxury feel but the service at Ten Bompas is comparable.

From my trip report:

The Ten Bompas was a funky boutique hotel. They had selected 10 well known interior designers and let each one do a room. Our room had a mural of the Joburg skyline and some funky colors, not our favorite but it was a very comfortable and well set up suite. Our friends had a wonderful wild Africa theme in theirs. Champagne was delivered to our suites and your in-room bar was complimentary – our kind of place! We went to our dinner reservation at Sides, the restaurant at the hotel which is very highly rated. Two of us loved our food (me being one) and the two ladies were not so hot on the special that they ordered which was mediocre. But the real talk centered around the Unisex bathroom which was supposed to cause some sort of shock value. You could hear people at other tables discussing it whenever someone returned and the staff would kind of look for a reaction out of the corner of their eye. I thought it a little odd that I could hear music blaring from behind a closed door when we were checking in. Ends up it was from one of the t.v.s that sit in the floor under glass in the Unisex playing music videos. It was not quite as risqué as it may sound – there are 3 stalls and they go from floor to ceiling making them as private as the loo in your house. The 3rd stall was interesting though as it was a urinal into a small ground trough with a large frosted glass wall behind it. There was a sensor beam that would activate water down the glass wall when your feet entered the beam. Of all the things people imagine you will encounter in Africa this was certainly the most bizarre and unexpected.
