Tanzania Visa - On arrival or ahead of time?

I've seen on this forum that it is possible to obtain a visa for Tanzania upon arrival. Is there any reason not to apply for it ahead of time by sending our passports and the application to the Tanzanian embassy? We'll be arriving from South Africa, connecting through Dar Es Salaam on our way to Zanzibar.

Also, the application asks for proof of sufficient funds - does one literally send a copy of their bank account?!

I've found it to be easier to get the visa upon arrival. If you get it at the embassy, you'll have to send in your passport, the completed form, 2 photos and the other info requested, such as the "proof of sufficient funds." At the Dar airport, all you need to have is the completed form and $100 (if you're a US citizen.) You don't need the photos or proof of funds.

I should think that you would be able to obtain a visa at any international port of entry, including Zanzibar. Do you have your yellow fever inoculation. I believe Tanzania is now requiring it. The visa fee is $100 for US citizens, but may still be $50 for all others. I'm waiting to hear back from the Tanzania Embassy as to the visa fee for a Brazilian citizen going with me to Tanzania in September.

I am from EU and was also told by my tour oprator in Tanzania that obtaining a visa upon arrival is very easy. While others approach the bags belt at the airport you can get your visa. Yes it is possible to get one at any international airport. We are flying directly from EU to Kilimanjaro airport, code JRO.
The same is supposed to be crossing the Tanzania-Kenya (or viceversa)border by the shuttle bus to/from Nairobi: easy and time saving if compared to sending passports to the embassy etc...
