Tanzania safari - lodges and tour company

Looking at going to Tanzania anywhere between end of Oct to beginning of Dec 2008. I like the idea of flying from Arusha to Serengeti and driving one way back stopping at Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire and then a possible excursion to Zanibar. What part of Serengeti is best this time of year? What tour companies/lodges? Can you book lodges yourself and drive yourself or should you use a tour. There are 2 of us.

We booked a private tour for the two of us with Good Earth tours - www.goodearthtours.com They have lots of different safaris and for only a little extra, can make it for just the two of you.

What part of the Serengeti is best? North, but have a look at www.kiliwarriors.com and click on the month you want to go for a safari designed to put you in the right location. Pick an itinerary, then you can click on the camps. There have been good reports on Kiliwarriors.

Other companies Good Earth in TZ and Virginia (mentioned above)
Green Footprints in TZ
Roys in TZ
Africa Serendipity in NYC
Africa Adventure in Ft. Lauderdale
Africa Travel Resource in London
Go2Africa in South Africa

Don't try to do this yourself, use an agent. You can easily design the trip for just the 2 of you through one of the above agents for a reasonable cost. Some of them offer small group tours as well.

We went end of Nov. in 2007 and had a marvelous trip with Roy Safari, in Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. We stayed at the Kikoti in Tarangire, at the Sopa by the Crater and the Serena Serengeti--see trip report: Safari for Photography with Roy and photos at www.pbase.com/pattyroth

would ask a consultant specialised in TZ who has visited recently these camps. won't be more expensive than booking it yourselves.

happy planning!
