Tangier

We're planning a trip to Spain in Sept. and would like to go to Morocco. We only have time for a day trip. I have read that Tangier is like Tijuana and am wondering if it is worth going there? Anyone have suggestions?

    karen55, I visited Tangier about 20 years ago and then again last month. Oh my gosh, how it has changed. I absolutely do not recommend it. It has become a crassly opportunistic and phoney place. The snake charmers are fake, the camel rides are fake, the market is fake - everyone is out for a buck. The belly dancing as compared to my last visit was laughable - completely changed into a westernized routine where the dancers pull people out of the audience, etc. Also, the city is very western, even in the 'kasbah' now, with lots of concrete buildings and not much atmosphere. Getting there is a real drag - well, I can only speak for the ferry which was an ordeal of hours in a smelly miserable boat. If you go, fly or take the fast hovercraft. The tourist hotels near the port are dreadful. Taking even the shortest walk in the evening led to local men approaching and asking if we wanted to buy drugs or have sex. Our guide told us many Europeans come over for the weekend just for those 'attractions'. I can't tell you enough how disappointed I was because I LOVED Tangier the first time. The place has totally lost its atmosphere in my opinion. It is NOT a beautiful place.
