South Africa - Sabi Sands & Timbavati weather in July

I am going to be in Sabi Sands and Timbavati during the last weeks of July and early August. Have read a number of different accounts of the weather. Can anyone who has been in the area in late July/early August comment on the weather? It seems like a low of 35 degrees Fahrenheit and a high of 80 is the consensus, I am just looking for some further information.

That is about right. Even if I said 42 -75 F would that affect what you packed? Dress so that you can take off as it warms and add on as it cools. It will be dry.

Thanks for the reply - you make a good point on the "42-75" - however, if it were, say, 30 to 70, that would affect the packing!

Thanks again for the response.

Assuming you will be at safari camps, they will have wool blankets for those day-break game drives. But you will still need a hat.

Lately its been down to the 30's in the early morning.

You can keep an eye on the weather of Dixie which is just outside Sabi Sands

Here's weather link for Skukuza camp in Kruger, bordering Sabi Sand -
http://tinyurl.com/3z5joqz
It gives five day forecast and weather history.

Hey, Mike - you have a safari to Sabi Sand in July, right? Any new camera kit? Do you use a bean bag or monopod much??

We were in both areas June 2-13 and the rangers are using a Norwegian weather site we were unfamiliar with: www.yr.no . They said it gave the most accurate readings and forecasts.

Here is a link to the long term forecast for Sabi Sand:
http://www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/...erve/long.html

and Timbavati:
http://www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/...erve/long.html

We dressed in layers on the morning game drives and found a warm hat, gloves and neck warmer or scarf were indespensible. We also wore rain/wind pants (over our regular pants) which helped to keep our legs warm. It's the wind when the vehicle is speeding along which makes it feel so cold. So anything that cuts the wind will help. It did warm up after about an hour, when we shed the warm layers. The evening game drives weren't nearly as chilly.

Have a great safari!

Thanks for all of the replies!

Ovenbird - where did you stay on your recent adventure? Would love to hear your thoughts on your accommodations, and any recommendations....

asm79, we stayed at Dulini and Ngala Tented Camp (not the Main Camp). We liked both very much. My very short (sorry, I'm not good with trip reports) is at http://www.fodors.com/community/afri...d-dog-pups.cfm .

Hi Tom, yes I am heading back on July 25th. I have purchased a new 1.4 X converter that is better and compatible with more lenses
and a new 70-300 L which is the new professional model of the lens.

I do not take a tripod or bean bags. I am hoping the lodge may have some there I can use if I want, but in general, I hand hold on all my shots or rest the lens on the vehicles.

Hi asm79

I am also heading back at the end of July and shall be there until beginning of September and I am packing a lot of warm stuff for early mornings and late afternoon evenings, gloves, scarf, beanie, etc as in an open vehicle it can be super cold! So the actual temp is not that relevant when you are whipping around at night in an open vehicle. During the day it can certainly be just a tshirt likewise later in the morning or earlier in the afternoon when in the vehicle in the sun! Layering is certainly a good option. Have a great time!

Kind regards

Kaye
