Some Safari "deals"
I found this article in yesterday's New York Times that might be of interest to those able to schedule a somewhat last-minute vacation:

NYT: <i>"Selous Safari Company is offering low season rates, normally offered only in November and March. The discounted price, which is good through March 2012, starts at $507 a person a night, down from $712 at its Jongomero camp in the remote Ruaha National Park and $610 a person, a night, down from $815 (a 25 percent discount) at its 13-tent camp in the Selous Game Reserve."</i>
I hate to be the skeptic, but these prices don't seem to reflect a true 25% discount. For example, in January of 2010 we spent time in both Jongomero and Selous Safari Camp. The price for Jongomero $470 pp and for SS $520 pp. We also got all of our in country flights for free on Coastal Air as part of the deal.
I'm not saying there aren't good deals to be found. But I don't think the NYT did their homework very well. They may have just re-quoted some PR material sent their way.
Don't believe everything you read -- even in the NYTimes.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one not to be that amazed by those deals!
There are much better deals around- like the Wilderness 6 countries special which has camps in Botswana like Duba Plains and Tubu Tree for $350 a night with no single supplements.

If you google "6 countries special Wilderness", a number of operators have the details on their website. This is just the first one I came across-
http://www.encompassafrica.com.au/article.asp?aid=131
I think it's up to individual agents how much they mark up the special- I've seen it advertised between $350 and $400. I've booked a trip in December and the agent I used charged $350.
There are also some conditions- I think you need a minimum of 2 camps for 3 nights each. I'm going to Duma Tau and Tubu Tree, as well as Kwara, which is with the similarly priced "5 Rivers special".
