Self guided tour Morocco

FORUM POST FOR MOROCCO

We (myself 83 yrs, daughter 50yrs, granddaughter 25yrs) are planning a trip Spain & Morocco commencing early May.
1. We plan 3-4 days Madrid with at least one day trip out the city perhaps to Grenada.,
2. To Algeciras for Tangier there pick up reserved rental car and drive to Kenitra where we'll stay the night.
3. Daughter born on then USN base Kenitra that is now a RMAF Base. In early afternoon next day drive to Fez for 2-3 days stopping by Volubilis on way.
4. A full day drive Fez to Marrakech staying there 2-3 days.
5. Over to Essaouira for several days.
6. To Casablanca, drop car, see some of city and leave following day for JFK.

I drove around Morocco a lot back in the early 60's and I'm sure highways are a lot better now.

Questions.
1. Comments please on plan.
2. .Any recommendations car rental Morocco?
3. .Does anyone have any clues how we may get a pass to visit RMAF base Kebitra for dau. to see/visit site where she was born?
4. Any recommendations for moderate priced hotel Kenitra, Fez, Marrakech, Essaouira and Casa? Kenitra not listed in Tripadvisor.

.

Grenada is far from Madrid but is on the way to Algeciras. I would pick up a car on leaving Madrid, stop in Grenada to see the Alhambra (remember, you must have tickets to this for the date and the hour you want to visit), and drop the car in Algeciras. With AutoEurope there is no drop off fee. The ferries from Algeciras now go into a new port called Tanger Med which is some 40kms from Tangier. I should think you could pick up a rental car there and proceed on the road to Kenitra if you want to by-pass Tangier. Last time I researched this, you could take a ferry from Tarifa (near Algeciras) right into Tangier port but don't know about today. We wanted to hop the train to Kenitra. We worked on the Navy base for a few years right before it closed, the American base. Don't know how you could get a pass onto the base today but have a contact who might know. Don't know any of today's hotels, but there is a nice one at Plage des Nations off the road to Rabat right near Bouknadel (remember that base ?). We were going to stay with a friend in Kenitra. From Kenitra I would go to Rabat before going on to Volubilis and Fez.

We are thinking of a trip to Spain and Maroc at about the same time. Have to see if I can get FF tickets. We were in Madrid last year so will be by-passing it. Going to try to fly into Malaga, take a bus to Algeciras, go over to Maroc, return to Alceciras, pick up a car, drive to Almeria province where we lived for many years, and out thru Malaga.

Hope this helps.

Further to NAS Port Lyautey: My suggestion would be to drive up to the gate, explain why you would like to enter and wait. Someone will surely invite you all in.
