self-drive from Nelspruit to Phinda

We're about to leave for our fifth trip to SA from the US. We have bought an old car that we leave in Nelspruit.

What is the quickest way to drive from Nelspruit to Phinda? We've tried driving on the R40 into Swaziland only to find that the highway became a one-lane dirt "road." Even the part of the R40 to Barberton was under contruction this summer.

Any advice?
