I am applying for a research grant that would land me in South Africa for about six months. It sounds like a wonderful place, but I'm concerned about safety issues. <BR> <BR>As a young woman traveling and living alone, would I be in any danger? <BR> <BR>Sidenote: My research is on African poetry. Lisa?? <BR> <BR>However, I spoke to a few ladies here at work about your question and they were unanimous that you could have a problem. Issues such asplace of study, trusted accommodation, mode(s) of transport, studying and travelling after dark, travelling alone to remote areas, etc. were mentioned. <BR> <BR>I unfortunately can not get myself to give you a positive answer about this one specifically - I am sorry. <BR>

Hi there <BR> <BR>You haven't stated where in South Africa you will be staying. <BR>I am South African living in the U.A.E. and one of the reasons we left South Africa is because of the high crime rate. It really is sad because I do still consider it my home, but they will literally kill you for a mobile phone. I would really reconsider if I were you. It is very sad because it truely is a beautiful country.

My daughter and I are planning a trip to South Africa and are also conserned about safety.As it is 2 women traveling alone. We will be flying into Johannesburg and on to Cape Town for 4 Days. Then flying to private game reserve for 3 days. Then to Victoria Falls before heading home.The travel agent said she can arange for airport pickup.And we would be take local day tours of the area around Cape Town. <BR> We do have to stay one night in Johannesburg,which I don't like. What do you think about the safety of a trip like this? Thanks for any info.

Hi Joan <BR> <BR>Your trip sounds great, and I'm sure it won't be a problem safety-wise. As long as you don't display jewelry, cameras, wallets etc. and roam around after dark. I would suggest the Airport pick up in Johannesburg. Basically just be aware of what is happening around you. But don't become paranoid about it and have a great time. Kristen's situation is very different. She will be researching African poetry and travelling on her own to (I presume to some remote places). That needs to be reconsidered. <BR> <BR>But you will be fine, and have a great time. Let us know how it was. <BR> <BR>Regards. <BR>Laura

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer to Kristen's question. As to Joan's question, I would say, you will be fine. For private game reserve and Vic Falls, you will have no concerns. Cape Town, I would recommend staying at a hotel in the Waterfront so that you do not have to drive around at night. All your entertainment will be right there. Jhb, stay at a hotel in Rosebank or Sandton. do not drive at night and get your hotel to pick you up at the airport or arrange for the hotel to take you to the mall. If you are in Jhb on a Sunday, do not miss the great craft market at the Rosebank mall.

Just got back from three weeks in SA, and the ideas posted are right on the mark. Have no concerns ... we felt safer there than in Dc where I am now. You'll see once you arrive. The wines are wonderful ... drink lots. Have a great trip. By the way, if you're flying SAA, check with them often ... they change equipment and mess up seating like you cannot believe. Good airline, but expect a seating screw-up. Check often, and pin it down. Check the day before every flight. Ciao
