Put my mind at ease about visiting Cairo

Jump to last reply

How safe/otherwise would all you Egypt experts expect Cairo to be in mid-February 2013? How is the security situation looking at the moment? As February is around the 2 year anniversary of the Arab Spring, is large scale rioting likely?

I am a 21 year old Australian woman and will be traveling with my male partner who is 22. I have extensive experience traveling in sub-Saharan Africa and also in South-East Asia, but have never visited a strictly Muslim country such as Egypt before. I'm imagining it will be very different to somewhere like Malaysia, which while Muslim is very liberal. What level of street harassment should I expect, and how do I avoid it? (Going off my experiences in Zanzibar, which is also Muslim-majority and quite observant, here, though I imagine Egypt will be totally different) Will it be safe to go out on my own, or should I stick with my partner at all times? Also, is the fact that we aren't married likely to be any sort of problem?

With regards to accommodation, we're on a tight budget, so are super cheap hostels in Giza and Cairo generally considered to be safe, or is it generally recommended to stay in a more expensive hotel?

Any warnings/tips/must-sees in Cairo are welcome! We're spending about 9 days in Egypt and probably won't have the time or the money to leave Cairo - unless visiting Alexandria in that time as well is feasible?

Sorry for all the rambling. A little nervous!
