Pronunciation of 'Gonarezhou'

Hi Fodorites!
We're getting VERY excited about our upcoming safari to Tanzania in June!!! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us first-timers. We appreciate the packing lists and the what-I-wish-I would-have-taken postings.

Unrelated question: I teach a unit on elephants/DNA analysis to my biology students. Can someone describe how to correctly pronounce 'Gonarezhou?' Thank you so much.

I will be sure to describe our trip when we return!

Really, much as it appears, phoenetically - so let me try.

ghana (like the country)
ray
ju

Gonarezhou is in the Northeast portion of South Africa where it borders the Southeast corner of Zimbabwe. From memory and without a map in front of me, I believe I have that right!

Thank you Sandi! I had been saying the -zhou like "cow" so it is great to know I should say it more like -ju.

Appreciate the help!

Gonorezhou is in the southern part of Zimbabwe, bordering Mozambique. If Mugabe would quit putzing around, it is planned to be part of the new Transfrontier park. With all the poaching going on there, one wonders if any game will be left.

Incidently, a game ranger was killed earlier this week in Gonorezhou. He was trying to breakup an elephant fight. The injured elephant of the two instead attacked the ranger after he fired shots in the air.

Hello,

The Zimbabweans I've met pronounce it one of two ways:

Gonna-ray-zhoo

Gonna-re-zhoo (the 're' with the same e sound as in 'bet' or 'vet')

Cheers,
Julian

Hey, hey Julian - you're back. Welcome home!

sblack - Julian provided an alternative, but rest assured, either are close enough and with such an unusual (and rather sexy/exotic*) word, unless you really mess it up... it'll be understood.

*sounds that way to my ear!
