private game reserve-kruger

I am flying into Cape Town, staying for 4 days and then have a safari booked at Kwandwe Game Reserve for 4 days. I selected this reserve because they have an opportunity to work with a charitable organization which is located right on the reserve. It is the perfect program for my daughter and I. We would like to book a second safari at another private game reserve after our stay at Kwandwe. My preference is within Kruger or around. My problem is availability...and also the fact that I am flying out of Capetown and would like the least difficult route from this second reserve back to Capetown . It seems there will be a lot of different transfers on this last journey.

I have investigated Sabi Sand and the only lodge they have available is the Idube Game Lodge. I took a look at it and the accommodations don't seem that great to me. Sabi Sabi does not have availability. Looking for something mid luxury ($400 CAD pp).

Thanks for any advice....

Hi jdurham!

Sounds like a nice experience for you and your daughter and wonderful that you've included an opportunity to give back!

It would be really helpful to know when you are planning this trip? What are your dates? It would also be helpful to know how old our daughter is because there are age restrictions at certain lodges and that eliminates some. Please pass along some further details.

Have you considered Timbavati Private Game Reserve? Like Sabi Sand, it also shares a fence-less border Kruger which means the animals move freely. Another option would be Manyeleti Private Game Reserve. My guess is that you must be on rather short notice if all that's available (or so you have been told) is Idube. Perhaps a safari planner would be able to better help you with a more expansive and swifter search at your pricepoint. Just a thought.

You will not have trouble flying out of one the Reserve airports (HDS, SZK or KMIA). Flights run regularly. It would help to know what time your flight leaves CPT though and whether it stops in JNB anyway.

Thanks for your help Dianne. The second game reserve is for July 31-Aug 4. We fly out of CT 10 pm Aug 5. I thought we should spend the night of Aug 4 in CT rather than spend a day travelling and then get on a 12 hour plane that night. The flight is direct and does not stop in J/berg
My daughter is 15- so basically an adult...

I will most definitely check out your suggestions...

Thanks again

Is there a good private game reserve in the Kruger area that would allow me to fly direct into CTown. That's ideal.

Hi!

Depending upon which lodge you stay at, you will be able to access one of the 3 reserve airports fairly easily. Happy to assist in a search for you. I think there would be more options for you than only the one you have been presented thus far. Let me know.

Here's a map of almost all of the lodges in greater Kruger. Senalala and Shindzela are missing. The airports are on there too. All lodges can arrange a (short) road transfer from the nearest airport. Check websites for rates, email lodges for availability if no online booking. Or ask Diane for help.

I recommend Sabi Sand, Klaserie and Timbavati private reserve lodges as they are unfenced to Kruger National Park. This year availability is very tight. Check Kings Camp, Senalala, Cheetah Plains. There are many, as shown on the map.

Unless you want to hire a charter or use scheduled cheaters through JNB or Lanseria, you must use commercial airports and road transfers. Diane has a better idea of which airports have direct flights through CPT. Consider flying from Port Elizabeth to Kruger through JNB if more convenient to Kwandwe.

Have fun!

Which lodge in Klaserie? If Senalala, don't miss a bush walk. One of the rangers there is one of the best in the industry.

Great! Please let us know how it goes. Few people on Fodors visit the Klaserie lodges. You are both going to love it! KSRC is beautiful.
