HI Jeremie - fabulous photos! We will be going to Rwanda in July - staying in Kigali for 3 nights and taking one day to go ORTPN Gorilla trecking - any advice on places to go (other than Genocide museums) / places to stay. We are thinking Hotel Des Milles Collines.
Thanks for any tips.

aaaaah
the land of a thousand hills. Rwanda was beautiful.

you probably won't have time for going to Nyungwe, but if you did I would highly recommend it.

I wish I had more local recommendation in Kigali. I really like the city.

But even a drive across the countyside is wonderful.

We did not do the gorilla trecking (will do this in Congo instead so can't help you much with this). The Akagera park is nice and recommended (though nothing to compare with Kenya's and Tazania's but still lots of animals to be seen). Nyanza and Butare are also nice. I will talk about it soon in the blog. As well as a fantastic road we recently discovered.
We usually stay in a guest house in Kigali called Beausejour, nice and cheap (27usd/night). I find Mille Collines quite expensive and not really worth it.

Wayne - I keep coming across your posts - it looks like you had a wonderful trip (apart from your mishap with your camera... but that didn't stop you getting fab photos and footage!). Where did you stay in Kigali? I can't remember where you said? Recommended?

Jeremie - How far is Akagera from Kigali? I have read 3 hours - is this correct?

Is there anyplace either of you would recommend for a day trip from Kigali?? Our last day we will have free and I wouldn't mind taking off out of the town. Any ideas??

had even more mishaps than that.

Let's see in Rwanda i stayed in Mille Collines at the start. I was definitely let down the first time. It is like a Best Western/Howard Johnson's

Then we drove out to Nyungwe. We stayed at the ORPTN Guesthouse. A very very very sparse concrete interior room.

Then the Bethanie Guest House in Kibuye. A bit nicer with good French food and it was right by a lake. But gthe geckos everywhere made me CRAZY

Then Gorilla's Nest great room. Freezing. Love the grounds.

Then back to Kigali. By this point it felt like Versailles.

Jeremie,

Tell me more about Akagera.
How long were you there?
Where did you stay?
How far in distance and time from Akagera? (The 3 hours is what I've heard too, but wonder if that is realistic,)
What did you see there?
What activities did you do, if any, other than traditional game drives?
Anything else you think I should know about Akagera.

I'd like to include it on my next Rwanda visit.

Thanks!

Oops--that should read "how far in distance and time from Kigali?" Otherwise it is a trick question.

Akagera park is 2 hours drive from Kigali, the road is great (paved one) for most of the times, then a bit more rough but acceptable for african stadards. Two possibilities to stay inside the park : the Akagera game lodge (80 usd single, 100 usd double, BB included), or camping (3or 5 usd/night, need to rend a tent on top of that)
The mai activity is indeed game drive. There's also loads of birds to be seen in the area. I stayed inside the park for two full days. But you can do more than that, the park is quite big. What did we see? photos of animals we've seen are the blog.
Hope it helps, if you need more, don't hesitate
