When I have travelled in Europe, I bought a phone card in the country I was visiting and could call home fairly easily. Is there a phone card for use specifically in Israel? I don't plan to use it much but want to be able to call the "kids" a few times or check my voice mail. I know there are probably ways to get my Verizon cell phone to work internationally but I'm thinking that would cost more and be more of a hassle. Am I wrong?

I used a phone card in Israel and it was great. I bought it as a little kiosk in Tel Aviv for somewhere around $8. Like you I only used it here and there but I still had time left over when I returned home. Your hotel should be able to point out a place where you can find a card.
Hey abynrml, I don;t know whether this will work for you, but when I went to Israel from Australia, I bought some good telephone cards from http://www.telephonecard.com.au/ . Pretty cheap . I think I bought mega minutes http://www.telephonecard.com.au/Mega-Minutes.html
Hope this helps!
I have successfully used a Mobal phone in Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt. Don't need a card, don't pay any monthly fees - just buy the phone -about $100.00 and pay $1.00 per minute to call anywhere. The phone seeks out the nearest local net work - whatever it is. I particularly like the fact that I never pay anything unless I make calls. I don't have to mes about seeking sim cards - it works in over 100 countries. I read about it in a flight magazine. Put Mobal phone into your browser and see the latest details.
