Are they both worth it?
I've heard great things about petra by night....
the sleeping in tents seems a bit contrived...anyone had experience with it? any particular company?

Petra looks beautiful lit by candle light. If you're visiting Petra anyway, I think it's a good experience to see it at night also.
I haven't done the bedouin sleepover.
I really enjoyed Petra by night, but to get the best effect you need to lag back from the crowd (and ahead of the photogs with flash).
I wasn't that impressed with the night in the desert, but I didn't think the outfit I was with did a good job with the whole desert experience. (It was Explore!)

Did the Bedouin desert dinner folkloric show through the concierge here might check with them for best experience.
Did not do the overnite.
Good luck!
We did Petra by night and probably would again. HOwever, this time I would NOT try and do it the same day we hiked all over the site, including walking up to the top to see the monastery, etc. We were sooo tired that I don't think we enjoyed the night experience as we would have had we been less beat. (Oh and the crowd of shouting Italians at the back of the line where we were didn't help either!)
We did not do the overnight at Wadi Rum but did spend a day there, having hired a guide at the Movenpick. It was really magical! I actually preferred that experience to the Petra night jaunt.
We did not do the sleepover, but did do a 4 hour jeep tour of Wadi Rum. Loved it!
Hi
We did the Petra by Night about 3 yrs ago. It was interesting. The walk there is not lit well however, and the rocks lessen your footing. It was an experience that is once in a lifetime. Did not stay at a bedouin overnight, chose to stay at the Movenpick and was glad. Enjoy your trip.
