Pack separately or together?

Hello!

My wife and I will be going on safari in Feb/Mar of '08. I will be carrying on whatever photo backpack I decide to get, but as far as packing our clothes and other things, is it better to pack 2 smaller duffel bags (1 for each of us) or put everything in 1 larger duffel bag? We won't be flying anywhere once in Tanzania, so I don't think weight there would be an issue, plus from everything I've read we have to pack light! Thanks for any and all input!

2 smaller, and put a few of each person's stuff in each. What if they lost the one big one?

I agree, split your stuff between two bags. On a trip to Egypt, we packed all my stuff in one bag and all my husbands stuff in another. His bag failed to make the connection thru CDG

He only had the stuff in his carry-on, enough for a day or so, but not for a 10-day trip. If we had split up our belongings, we probably could have survived with only one bag.

The good news is that we got the bag back about 36 hours later. Thank goodness.

Not only use the 2 smaller bags, with some of each of your stuff in each bag, but carry on as much of the essential gear as you can. If it is not in your carryon, there is a possibility it will not be on your safari with you.

If you each wore a "safari vest," you could increase your carry on capacity greatly. You don't have to wear the vest while you are actually on safari, just as a wearable carryon for the plane. I fill every pocket of my vest for flights.
