Visa Note
The government of Syria refuses entry and transit to: any passenger holding a passport containing a visa (valid or expired) for Israel and those holding a stamp indicating an Israel-Jordan border crossing; females aged between 14 and 35 years unless accompanied by a father, husband or brother (and with proof of such status); and holders of passports bearing evidence of entry at Sharm El Sheikh, Rafha, Gaza or Nablus.

i couldn't find a 2nd confirmation of this information.
Does anyone know if this applies to US citizens? I'm a single female and would like to visit Syria on my own.

To complicate the issue, Timatic (the authority for such information and accessible from http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp
seems not to mention that restriction. Neither does the similarly authoritive World Travel Guide nor their US embassy (http://www.syrianembassy.us/syrian_visa_requirements.htm).
But to be safe, call the embassy.
There was a travel report by Maxwell last year on her trip to Lebanon and Syria, and I don't recall her mentioning this odd visa restriction.
As a side question, what proof would someone have to indicate that they are traveling with a brother -- would childhood pictures count?
Its not relevant to me, but I'm curious since I'm in the very early stages of preparing to visit Syria in May 2009.

Lerasp - Just call the embassy as others suggested. This certainly wasn't the case when I was there in November 2006 - I entered the country twice and traveled independently the entire time with no problem.
