Construction of the new Lebala airstrip is close to completion and Kwando expects approval to use it by December 1st. The new airstrip will be about 6 km southeast of the camp.

Thanks for the info, Pred. The long trip from/to Selinda was really awkward, both in terms of scheduling and being unable to go off-road.

I am not sure whether this is good or bad. In a way I was quite looking forward to a 2 hour drive through my old hunting grounds, but I am sure that my 2 hours will be better spent in Kwando.

I consider myself lucky to have been to Lebala in late August when the airstrip was flooded. I really enjoyed the drive to and from Selinda. The Selinda Channel, which was very full of water from all the rains in the previous months, has got to be one of the most beautiful spots in all of northern Botswana.

Btw, the transfer from lebala to the Selinda airstrip gets scenic only once you hit the spillway. Until then, you take the back roads (sable road through the mopane). i.e., not the direct/scenic route via Twin Pools/Mokoba etc etc.,

Yet, I think it was very generous of them to be good neighbors that enabled all of us to get to camp. I was just hopeful that I bump into some of the Selinda guides. Unfortunately, didn't cross paths.

You are right the Spillway is a beautiful place, but not after seeing it continuously for 6 days, as occurred on my last and final trip to Zibilianja. To my mind Johns Pan in Kwando is far more impressive as are the smaller water channels in Mapula.

i've seen several comments about the NEW TENTS at lebala but no pictures. not even on their site which seems odd.

we're planning a trip in Nov 09 and trying to decide between a few camps in botswana (in additon to little bush in SA)

does anyone have pictures they'd care to share
