We are on a Egyptian tour for 10 days and then we have one more day before we leave for London. We are staying at the Mena House Oberoi for three nights at the beginning of the tour. We want to stay downtown on the Nile our last night. We would really like to find a place that we can walk to some of the attractions. Any suggestions?

It is very difficult to walk in Cairo. First there is the traffic-crossing the main streets is very difficult. Second, the sidewalks are in very bad shape and I found myself looking down all the time to make sure that I did not trip.
Third, there is so much construction in front of the Museum that it is almost impossible to reach by foot.

We did find that taking the subway was fairly easy. We took it to a stop near Coptic Cairo in order to visit the Coptic Museum and had no problems on the system.

We stayed at the Cairo Marriott. We were there 4 different times. The last 3 we were in room # 803. It was at the end of the hall overlooking the Nile. I beleive others have walked around that hotel but we had a guide & a driver picking us up so it wasn't necessary. We did walk to AbuElSid restaurant for our last night with our guide. It had a wonderful menue.
Everytime we came back to the Marriott they said |"Welcome Back" It is a first rate hotel-hope this helps=Chris
I had wanted to stay at Mena House but am glad we stayed at Marriott

The Marriott is the ONLY choice for a good hotel if you want a location where you can get out and do something away from the hotel on foot. There are gobs of hotels on the Nile, but the Marriott is the ONLY one with a decent, safe, clean, hassle free location.
I second that vote.

DO NOT mistake the JW Marriott for the Cairo Marriott. You want the Cairo Marriott.

There are many 5* hotels with Nile View like;
- Semiramis Intercotinental
- Grand Hayat
- Four Season
- Ramses Hilton
- Cairo Marriott

There are many many more than that TravellerB. Add the Conrad, the Fairmont, not one but 2 Four Seasons, the Shepherd hotel, the Hilton Residence, Gizera Sofitel, Sheraton, and Maadi Sofitel. The only one decently placed though for getting out and about easily in a neighborhood you want to be in, with dozens of restaurants within walking distance, clubs, and other things to do is the Cairo Marriott.
And they are NOT paying me to say that. I just feel really strongly that this is the BEST overall placed hotel in the city.

Does anyone have any experience regarding the new Kempienski Nile hotel? They have a junior suite rate of 208 Euros whcih would be great since there are three of us.

qwovadis - when was the review for the Marriott done that seems mediocre? They comletely gutted the place and redid every room, every elevator and more. If someone says it is mediocre now, I would say they need the 4 Seasons and certainly anyting less would seem mediocre. The review might be a few years old. I'm quite curious.
The Fairmont is lovely, but even with all that nice new feel, the area outside is the ghetto and you won't feel comfortable trying to walk to a restaurant or club as there aren't any you'd want to go to near by...except in the attached mall. Am I wrong on that?
