Murder at Mountain Village TZ

Did anyone hear about this? My friend in Tanzania just emailed me this horrible news.

Dear Kristina,
I am sure you heard what happened at the Mountain Village last month? Four clients were walking around lake Duluti, 3 Americans and an English one accompanied by the walking guide from the lodge (Mountain Village) were robbed, they took all the stuff they were carrying with them (money, cameras, and binos) the guide tried to react and they shot him on the side of the head and the pregnant American then they disappeared into the thick forest. They were taken to the hospital to try to save their life for some days but they were not lucky. It is a very sad story that happened.

Lynn,
This sounds like the same incident plus more. I hope this doesn't dissuade anyone from going to Tanzania (or Kenya). What can I say? It's very sad, but it happens everywhere including the good old USA.

It happened while I was in the bush. I was told a few young teenage boys were caught shortly after the incident.

Actually I forgot to inquire about it afterwards.

Safarimama, thank you for posting. I am finding conflicting news articles. Did the guide die from his gunshot wound to the head? It is not mentioned in many of the articles. Were the robbers actually caught? Odd not to see a follow up on this in the news there. And what about the robbery that was a month earlier? Did they ever catch those guys?

unfortunately I know more about this because the guides were from Green Footprint Adventures.. Hired by Ranger Safaris.
The guide that was shot in the had didn't survive the gunshot in his head. The other guide was Herman, many people might know him from the Canoeing he does for GFP on small momella lake in Arusha NP...
The robbers weren't caught...
A very sad incident indeed.

Nikao, thank you for filling us in. I know little about Arusha but it seems strange even with incentives that I read about, that no one came forth to help find the killers. This Lake is a regular tourist area.

The other guide, Herman, was not shot? One article said a tourist was shot in the stomach and another in the leg. Do you know if they both recovered? I am wondering if an American had gotten killed if there would have been more pressure to solve this and/or at least follow it up in the press.

I know Herman, from canoeing and visiting
Arusha NP. How horrible this whole event is. Terrible, terrible for the tourists and of course for the guide, Charles Safari and his family.

they both recovered, sad addition to the story is that the woman who got shot in the stomach was pregnant at the time..

Herman was ok but had to spent quite a while in prison because they were interrogating him and they were the only one they īgotī.... sad sad story indeed, but incidents like this are rare fortunatly in Tanzania..
