mosquitos at Mala Mala - October

I am a mosquito magnet. I'm definitely going to need to do a fair bit of research to find out what type of malaria pills will be best (considering the drug interactions and side effects), but I was wondering if any of the MM regulars could give feedback on the general situation there? I don't remember seeing anythign about mosquito nets in the rooms so I'm wondering if it is not as bad there.

I was at MM last October and did not see any mosquitos though, admittedly, it was my only visit there. I think you are right that there are not nets in the rooms -- I don't recall seeing one in mine.

My wife is a mosquito magnet as well. We were at Mala Mala, Mashatu and Camp Jabulani last October and we both did not receive one bite. We used the bug spray supplied by the camps.

There are no nets in the rooms...but I imagine you can request them.

It depends on what time of year you are there. This area gets rain during the warmer months (November to March) and there can be a lot of insects at this time.

Hi kak113

I also seem to get bitten by mozzies. I would definitely use the spray MM provide. Not sure when you are going but except for the middle of winter I am always very careful. In winter I have so many layers on, I do not think a mozzie could find any skin to bite!

Kind regards

Kaye

during dry season - which october is - it shouldn't be a problem.
i am also a mozzi magnet and i always have my own mosquito net with me. it's small, light weight and i can fit it under almost any circumstance.
as there are no such things like "100% insect proof tents" i learnt my lesson once and since then travel with a net.
not only in view to mosquitoes. also in lodges with thatched roofs it's wise to have one. wouldnt be the first time that a scorpion or snake falls from the roof.

You should be fine inside the rooms - they have air con and so need not really be worried, as long as keep the windows shut.

thanks, topping with a follow up question as my ankles are now swollen from an attack of NJ mosquitos.

Een though it will be warmer should I be wearing long pants, socks and sneakers, as well as long sleeves on the game drives and in the boma? though that begs the question, am I a sitting duck if we try to use the pool or does this bug spray work that well?

I am imagining how uncomfortable it would be to be in my current state on a long plane ride, so any remedies for bites are also welcome! - kathy

I have been to MM three times, three different years, in September. Mosquitos were not a problem for me nor anyone else that I was aware of. They (MM not they mosquitos) provide spray for both the room and your person. I sprayed a little on the exposed portions of my person. I'm not a "pool" person though so can't comment on that specific question. Regarding your NJ mosquitos, they require a much different type of repellent, something like battery acid . You're going to love MM, I plan to go back next year.

I agree,it will be a long summer in Jersey - will be using bug spray from now on whenever leaving the house after work. glad to hear the situation is so under control at MM. 81 days and counting, we can't wait.

at A chinese pharmacy you could try to get "white flower". a liquid which i put onto my mosquito bites. as soon as it's applied it stops itching.
i bought it in papua new guinea - that country is almost covered by itchy things - and since then it's my constant companion!
