Migration-not yet in Kenya
I have seen several postings asking about the Wildebeast migrations so I thought I would add some input. I just returned from the Masai Mara and can report that the vast herds have not yet crossed the border into Kenya as of August 8. We booked our itinerary to coincide with the likely Mara crossings but showed up early; the local knowledge reports they are late this year and may not come for a few more weeks. It was a bit of a bummer as we planned our trip around it. We still had good animal viewings (including many Wildebeasts from Loita) and enjoyed Little Governor's; esp recommend the balloon tour.

Hey Dave,
Sorry you didn't get to see the great herds, but thanks for the input. I know each year is different, but I am going next year early July and planed on being in the Western Serengeti to see the herds. There is hope.
Thanks,
Duane

I can sympathize as someone who was a little frustrated last Feb by the lack of rain's affect on the migration--but I am sure that you had a great time anyway. Looking forward to more trip details when you get a chance.

It sounds like all the heavy rains have left plenty of vegetation and water for the herds so they are more dispersed than the past few years and are slower to move into Kenya.
Here's a link to a good report from Nomad that tracks the migration. We were in Tz in January and April and the things written in the report for those dates match well with what we saw on the ground, so it seems to be an accurate update ... http://www.atta.co.uk/nomad/index.html

Migration is having their last meals around Bologonja(northern Serengeti) this week and is heading towards Masai Mara, the group that arrived yesterday in Arusha reported to have seen the tails end in Lobo last week.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Looks now like a good portion of the herds have followed the sporadic rain patterns and crossed back into the Serengeti. They're expecting a second migration into the Mara.

I don't understand your not seeing the Wildebeast migration. We just returned from two weeks in Kenya and our last four in the Masai Mara. We saw thousands of Wildebeasts and zebras and spent one day watching them cross a river. Saw many bodies of Wildebeasts that had broken legs in the water and died. It was a wonderful experience. We returned on the 19th. Because of the migration we saw many, many lions that had come to feed. Sorry it didn't work out for you. Betty
