We shall spend a week at Kruger national park. We are wondering whether to take a day or two to have a quick look at Maputo or Swaziland. Can anyone please give us some advice?

when are you going? We are going to Swazi in early October. It is supposed to be the little Switzerland of Africa. Can tell you more after we come back.
I was in both places in August. I would definitely recommend Swaziland, especially Mkhaya Game Reserve (I saw 15 different rhinos, including many juveniles and babies). I also visited Maputo (great hotel = Hotel Polana) -- I would advise visiting if you like busy African cities, with vibrant markets. I didn't notice any other tourists in the markets, felt very safe and had a great time.
