There have been some recent disturbing reports and warnings issuing from UK and France, pursuant to kidnappings along the Malie/Niger and Mali/Algeria and Mali/Mauritania borders.
Starting Wednesday next week, we are planning to travel from Bamako overland to Mopti, Dogon, Douentza, Timbuktu, back down Niger River to Mopti, and overland back to Bamako.
The kidnappings and security issues related to AQIM appear hundreds of miles away and we are planning to go ahead with an experienced, dedicated guide.
Any thoughts and assurances most welcome. Thanks/regards.

Trip Report - Honeymoon Safari in Tanzania - End of July/August 2012

I too was alarmed to see the UK travel warning--I've been thinking of checking out Mali at some point but didn't have any clue about the potential safety hazard. It did make me want to learn more about the country and see what the issues are.
I would be most interested to hear about your trip, especially the Dogon portion. That area seems fascinating.
