Hi, we are planning to travel end July/beginning August to Kenya/Tanzania/Zanzibar.
Is it necessary or to you recomend an Antimalaria treatment and what kind to you suggest.

Heinz, you should visit your local travel clinic where you can have this and other questions about travel medicine requirements and recommendations answered specifically. Most of us on the forum take the antimalarial tablets daily while on safari. I take Malarone without any side effects. The less popular Lariam tends to have more side effects and I believe is prescribed less frequently these days.

Heinz: I have been recommended to buy a really good insect replant. There is not malaria vaccine and some say that if you get malaria after using a antimalarial treatment their can be compilations. However if you are told differently please let me know because I will be on safari in July as well.

A couple of things to keep in mind when making your decision, this year has been unusually rainy so far with more mosquitoes. If you're visiting lower elevation areas (i.e. Samburu, Amboseli), this puts you at higher risk.

We have visited TAZ and Kenya at different time incl. Aug, Sep and never had any problem.

We use insect repellent, cover our legs and arms at down and dust and have a malaria prophylaxis as stand-by medication as we don't like to swallow chemicals which means shooting a fkly with a cannon ;-)

Depending on where you go in Tanzania I would rather be concerned whether there are Tsetse flies which are extremely annoying!

Thanks everybody for their suggestions.
Many friends suggested Malarone, because there are no side effects. Normally in winter shouldn't be a problem, but as Patty said, there was a lot of rain and I will go in these two national parks.
Is it cheaper to buy malarone in Kenya?

Check the CDC reccommendations for the areas you will visit as well. Travel Clinincs are a great resource, but also have a tendancy to reccommend EVERY vaccine for the country you are visiting. Malerone or similar is strongly reccommended by the CDC. The Tsetse flies can be a huge problem in TZ, especially late Jan through March. I've used Sportsmen REPEL with good success, and you can also get a Premetherin spray, which is good to spray on clothing, bedding etc.


Also, you will probably need a Yellow Fever Vaccine to go into TZ. They tend the change the YF requirement on a monthly basis, so better to be safe than sorry.

thanks all for your suggestions. I think in order to avoid problems we will take vaccinations for yellow fever.
