Within June/July 2010 I have been to Madagascar, travelling independently and using public transport. My route included Mangily/Ifaty, Toliara, Isalo NP, Ranomafana NP, Fianarantsoa, Ankarafantsika NP, Mahajanga, Amber Mountain NP, Ankarana NP, Ramena, Andasibe-Mantadia NP, and Antananarivo. I have not found travelling in Madagascar rather difficult but very interesting and rewarding.
When preparing the trip I sometimes used information gathered at this site - to repay this help, and also considering that information given in available guidebooks is very incomplete, I have put a very detailed report on my experience for others to use on the internet - if interested check it out at my site:

Happy travels to everyone.

Vaclav - this is one of the most thorough, detailed and practical trip reports I have ever seen. Wow! I agree that guide books on Madagascar are of limited value, and you have managed to cover much of that gap for the parts of Mad that you visited.
Thanks for taking the time to write it up, and for sharing.
I think you'll get more Fodorites interested if you also include links to your photos...
Hi Kurt,
Thanks for reading my trip report and for not being lazy to drop me those few complimentary words. I am glad you have found my report helpful.
I am sorry but I cannot share any pictures. I stopped taking pictures long ago after going through my pictures after coming back from a trip and realizing I could not actually remember being at those places. With camera I give too much thinking to what pictures and how I should take and forget to look and take in.
I've only had a chance to look at your report quickly so far but thank you for providing so much information.
Your link above didn't work but was able to Google your homepage and read your report. I think Lonely Planet should hire you out! I am planning on going the second half of March, hopeuflly the rains won't be too bad.
Hi Don,
Thanks for your nice words. I guess Lonely Planet should hire just anybody who is willing really travel to the places she/he is writing about.
Sorry about the link. it seems to be working now so hopefully it was just some contemporary problem.
Happy travelling
I've started reading, and it looks like a great report. May I make a suggestion? More paragraph breaks with spacing, please. It's kind of hard to read such long, unbroken blocks of text. The first part in all Bold is difficult to read, as well.
Hi lifelist, thanks for your interesting observation - I really appreciate your effort to help.
Nevertheless, please understand I have never been trying to actually write a well readable blog. My intention was to write a very informative trip report where I put all the information I would like to have before leaving for my trip but could not find it in the guidebooks. As I also needed to keep it within reasonable limits I was forced to write long complicated sentences packed with information. If I tried to make it better readable I would have to skip lots of facts.
Anyway, your remark is rather funny for me - I bet you are a young guy and as such you are now used to information being supplied in short distinct chunks (video clips and so). You know, I am an oldish guy and we still do not find it so difficult to read and understand long and convoluted sentences. Yet, no offence ment here, I have noticed I also have difficulties to survive old movies from 60' or so - they are so damn slow ....
Have fun.
