Though I don't use, understand Rick Steve's has a bag that many find is just perfect to meet weight and size as a carryon bag.

I used this as my carryon and my daybag on game drives:

I did not go carryon only though, so I can't help with backpacks.

This is what I take on safari -- soft-sided Osprey Ozone 22-inch bag -- absolutely love it. It's crazy lightweight (4 lbs 8 oz), holds an amazing amount, is great quality, has the perfect number of zipper pockets (for me -- not too few, not too many), and is just generally very well designed. The only downsides: (1) it's not cheap, but it does have a lifetime warranty; and (2) it only comes in green and grey. I'm sure it's available at lots of places but I bought at REI -- here's the link: http://www.rei.com/product/837014/os...led-luggage-22

>> but it does have a lifetime warranty <<

Whose lifetime?
Always get a chuckle out of this comment regarding any product!

I personally avoid any outside pockets, unless these can be locked, because you can never know if you happen to check the bag, what can be placed inside unbeknownst to traveler. For that matter if not checked... there are some slick people out there.
