Leaving on a jet plane...Sunday, May 23rd

I'm leaving on a jet plane...

Leaving for my 3rd African safari, first time to Botswana and Zambia
May 23/24 SFO to JFK to JNB
May 25 to Chitabe Lediba for 3 nights
May 28 to Little Vumbura for 3 nights
June 1 to Duma Tau for 3 nights
June 4 to Toka Leya, Zambia for 2 nights
June 6/7 to JNB to JFK to SFO

We went to Tanzania in 2/2008 as a once in a lifetime trip and started planning the return trip in 2/2009. I've had this Botswana trip planned since July 2009 (thanks Craig and Jenny from Travel Beyond) and I have 2/2011 already booked again for Tanzania (Naipenda Safari again). Can you tell I'm hooked?

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for all the help from the forum.

Those long waits are horrible. But oh so worth it. I hope you have an excellent adventure!

we are just beginning to explore a first trip to Africa....almost too much to contemplate...We're gonna need help. Your title also intrigued us...the excitement of exploration. Anyway, as first timers, we are looking for a wow introduction....being a bit older, safety and convenience are important factorsl. Any suggestions from you or fellow fodorites.....we'll have about 2 1/2 weeks. Also, any suggestions for airlines? Got loads of Star Alliance points and would love to do a journey which gets us there rested and ready. Thanks for any input....
p.s. You leave tomorrow...we'll be thinking of you and hoping you have a great journey.

Jodo, you might want to start your own thread so that people can offer their suggestions to you. Using Star Alliance miles, you can fly South African Airways to Jo'burg and on to any southern Africa destination from there. For East Africa, you can fly Swiss to Nairobi and do the same. Egypt Air also goes to East Africa and is a partner.

My bag are packed and I'm ready to go...

Just finished the final, final pack (been semi packed for 4-6 weeks). 28 lbs each (2 of us going) divided between 1 checked with non essentials, 2 carry-ons and 2 smallish camera bags. And that's without loading all my pockets.

In there are 6 cameras:
2 Canon 40ds with 17-55, 70-300 DO, 100-400
Sony HD FX-7 big camcorder
Canon HD HV20 smaller camcorder
Kodak HD waterproof Playsport (pocket camcorder)
Olympus pocket camera

Also:
laptop, flash and extender, 2 Wolverines, chargers, spare batteries, memory, empty beanbag, monopod, clamp and head for camcorder.

Did I forget anything?

2 or 3 large plastic bags should do good for humid/wet environment. They saved our equipment ones when a downpour surprised us.
A peace of fabric to cover your cam (which you haave on your lap while game driving) against dust.

Happy landings!

I was just having that discussion yesterday where I stated: "Garbage bags, don't leave home without them." The young man I was conversing with said, "That's what my grandma does too." Take it from me and the grandma, a couple of folded up garbage bags can come in very handy.

Taking a soft cloth to clean your lenses?

In some time zones you are already gone.

Thanks for the tips, I do have serval sizes of jumbo zip lock bags and a waterproof utility bag that holds my big camera/lense packed. I am going to a "water camp", Little Vumbura so only 1 camera will be "out of it's bag" at any one time. Will it be dusty in Botswana at this time of year?

Less so this year than others. And less dust now than later in the season. But dust can happen anytime on well used dry, sandy roads. You'll probably have the most dust in Chitabe.

Chitabe also got influenced by the floods/rainfall this year. Don't expect much dust there but don't be surprised if you get soaked at some stage.
