Last Minute Details -Leaving Next Wed

Leave next week for 14 day trip to Tanzania and am a bit panicked, though incredibly excited. I think we have the packing under control and within weight limits!! We're considering having a carry-on each which will have all our clothing, but checking a backpack with those toiletries over 3oz. We lost 1 bag once on an international flight that was never returned and are a bit gun shy on checked luggage.

Now we're trying to figure out money, correct denominations, and which currency. Many posters have been incredibly helpful, but am wondering about cash needed for visa/departure fees at airports, as well as aviation/safety fees. We arrive DAR ($100/person), but then connecting flight to Zanzibar. Is there a fee for that flight? Flight from Zanzibar to Arusha - fee for that one? Flight from Kogantende to Arusha - fee? Know the bus transit fee into Kenya. And then finally we fly out of Nairobi. Departure fee there?

Currency questions - Many have suggested various denominations for having US dollars, but also suggestions to change $100 for TZ shillings. Where does one use the shillings vs dollars. Will set aside US $$ for guide and visa/departure fees, but incidentals - US vs TZ shillings?

My lists of last minute questions seem to be getting longer rather than shorter. Yikes!!

International departures usually include the departure fees, such as your flight out of Nairobi. You could check with your airline to be sure. There is a domestic departure tax from Zanzibar to the Mainland, about US$5 or US$6.

You shouldn't need to exchange any dollars into TZ shillings, as dollars are accepted everywhere I've been. In Kenya, though, they prefer their own Kenyan shillings, so you will probably want to exchange there. The two currencies are not the same (Tanzania vs Kenya).

Enjoy your trip!

There's a departure fee when leaving ZNZ; to the mainland it's up to $10/pp; out of the country it's now $30/pp (maybe a few $$$ more).

The fees for internal flights should all have been included in your price. And, if you purchased your intl flight tickets yoursel, the departure fee from Nairobi when heading home, included in price of ticket.

In Tanzania, the few Tnz shillings can be used for roadside purchases and camp/lodge staff tips; otherwise, USD work just fine.

In Kenya, if sightseeing in/around Nairobi, entry fees are to be paid in Ken shillings.

Be sure you have had your YF inoculation and proof of same, especially for entry to Zanzibar.

Thanks for all the info. All our internal flights were purchased by our tour operator, so I guess all those fees are included. Got the $10pp for flight to exit Zanzibar to Arusha, and we also purchased our tickets from Nairobi to London. Again, so I guess we're good for that fee.

Sandi, thanks as always (you gave me lots of great advice in the early planning stages). Suggestions for use of the TZ monies vs dollars helps. Have our YF certificates.

This time next week I'll hopefully be sound asleep on the flight to London!!!
