We intend to hike only to the first day base camp. While I am a fit 60 year old, my knees cannot tolerate a straight ascent. I am wondering if the hike is more gradual like a Massada hike or straight uphill. If you have any additional information for gear, shoes, hydration, etc., I would appreciate that also.
