Kenya's elephants send text messages to rangers

Interesting news story about implanting GPS devices in crop-raiding ellies so Ranger's can try to break them of the habit and keep them from being killed. Once the GPS tells them the ellies are heading off the preserve and into nearby farm fields the Rangers try to herd/harass the elephant back to the preserve.

Good insights on the problems impoverished villagers face trying to grow crops near wildlife preserves, with ellies capable of wiping out 6 months harvest in one night.

That is fantastic. Both for the elephants and the farmers trying to raise crops. I hate it when wildlife has to die because of human encroachment so it's always a joy to hear about positive efforts to avoid wildlife being killed.
Thanks BillH

This is very innovative and due to the social learning nature of elephants hopefully over time if elephants are effectively turned away from the crops the specific individuals will avoid the activity but also not teach future generations to crop raid either.

Great study, I hope it continues to have long term success with wider application.
